ISIS (better know as ISIL) which stands for: "Islamic State in Iraq and (al-Sham basically the Arabic word of the Levant) the Levant" are a terrorist Organization/ Militia (which considers itself an independent State) that pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda in '04. As of now they aren't affiliated with Al-Qaeda because Al-Qaeda thinks they're too violent and extreme (yes AL-QAEDA think THEY'RE too extreme). Since they have this habit of mass executing civilians in cities they occupy that don't agree with their views.
They also frequently post videos of indiscriminate killings, executions, beheading's and the like (Google at your own risk as the content is of course EXTREMELY GRAPHIC).
They're currently the richest terrorist group in the entire world due to their occupancy of Syrian oil fields and antiquities, private and open funding, extortion, and theft. With their current gross margin at around 2 billion (don't quote me on this).
Their goals are most likely to force a withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq; to topple the Iraqi interim government; to assassinate collaborators with the occupation regime; to remove the Shia population and defeat its militias because of its death-squad activities; and to establish subsequently a pure Islamic state.

This is not a surprise to anyone familiar with that region. We (Americans) don't need to send military in and we should not have been there in the first place. No sense in Americans losing their lives over this. I feel bad for the civilians in Iraq but I would hate to see my friends in the military have to risk their lives for this.

Unless we had committed to rebuilding Iraq on the scale of the Marshall Plan it was pretty much doomed from the start, not that I advocate that course of action though. In a perfect world we'd have never invaded, it'd still be relatively stable and we'd still have a nice counter balance to Iran.

I'm with everyone else saying we should never have gone in. Terrible idea and now we'll seem like cowards or callous villains if we pull our support out. Problem is, we can't afford this right now and we have our own troops to worry about over there. Sad, hard truth.

Is America actually helping other nations...or just convinced that they are...?

I was in Afghanistan for 7 months while in the marines. To be honest, I had no idea while we were there, our command just said "just do as told, don't ask questions"
I was speaking to someone deployed at Okinawa Japan a while ago saying that US military needs to leave the country. The person said the exact same thing as you. "I was deployed here on command, I can't just leave". Diffusion of responsibility is a wonderful thing

In all fairness, I can't imagine things would go very well for the guy if he *did* leave. Maybe I'm wrong? Just it might not be so much diffusion of responsibility as it is the consequences for such an action.
Also, to which country were you referring, out of curiosity? Japan or Iraq?

Edit: As to the first question, I have no idea what our leadership has been doing for at least the past 14 years, other than run this country and its reputation straight into the ground.

Though really, it's been on that path since after WWII. Way too much involvement in parts of the world we really didn't need to be involved with. If we'd just stuck to our little half of the world, been good neighbors and focused on our domestic issues, I'm sure things would be better for the US and its people.

Plus people in other countries would think of the US as the ones that saved everyone in WWII, and killed all the Nazis, created the most incredible weapon the world had ever seen, then disappeared, like a hero in a story.

Ok, that last part might not be quite the view shared throughout the world, but it'd still have to be better than what we've got now.

What kind of talk is this boy ? We're freeing them from tyranny and oppression, we gave them justice and democracy, we are totally NOT after oil, natural resources and Opium Fields to mass produce heroin and ship it to the US making billions from a never ending drug war that employs DEA agents by the hundreds of thousands and fill up our prison quotas, nope, just that good old freedom when we destroy buildings and kill civilians with drone strikes

Its because of fanatic religious people and greedy corporation that could care less for other human beings. "It is said that humankind fought endless ethnic and ideological wars"...then someone said "If a powerful enemy appeared that wasnt human, the human race would come together and stop fighting" - DotPyxis.... but I dont know...I think human will have blown each other up before that day ever comes.

I think educated topics are best left to educated people. That being said, it is rather sad that we've let this government run rampant for so long, take the power back, the people must rise.

All the sacrifices for the sake of a crumbling nation just for nothing. It is so sad. Like Washington said we should have never interfered with any matters with foreign countries...
