Hey guys, have any of you ever played Shogo: Mobile Armor Division?

I used to love this game as a kid and recently I bought it again on GOG.com. It's an incredible mix of the mecha anime and FPS genres (which were at the apex of their popularity back in 1998.)

Usually you don't hear these two terms in the same sentence, but Shogo proves that even the unlikeliest of ideas can turn into an incredible FPS that pays tribute to anime.

I wonder if Monolith Productions will ever give us another Shogo game (or if another developer steps up and releases an anime FPS.)

I played the demo a lot as a kid. Then I got a cracked version later on but lost it somewhere.

I bought the GOG version around the time it came out and I've been dabbling through the game at a slow pace like I usually do. It's one of my favorite games thanks to its uniqueness and the mechanics still hold up pretty well, at least for me.

If Monolith decided to come back to Shogo after their new LOTR game, I would not object. I'd probably even buy it at release. They've being doing other solid FPS games, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for them, if Warner Bros just allows them to make games outside their big licenses.

Indeed. Besides, I always loved the idea of merging anime (or mecha anime, in that matter) with FPS mechanics.

Besides, old-school shooters have recently been making a splash on the gaming market (Rise of the Triad, Shadow Warrior...), so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to make a new Shogo game (with prettier anime visuals!)

I totally remember that game. Pretty fun if I'm remembering it correctly.

I know. It effortlessly blended anime with FPS mechanics and still ended up being a really great game.

I seem to recall the game suffered from some serious hit scanning problems. Later on, enemies would one-shot you as soon as you walked through a doorway.

Still, it's a surprisingly fresh take on the FPS genre, using an otherwise generic mecha anime setting.

Yeah, I also thought that getting insta-killed by an enemy as soon as you turned a corner was pretty cheap.

But the overall game was pretty good, and indeed it managed to merge two mediums that people initially thought was impossible (taboo, even.)

Anyway, as ridiculous as it might sound, I hope that someday, other game developers start considering making games that merge anime with the FPS genre.

I got that game as a 2-pack with Septerra Core. I left the disk up in Canada before I could ever play it.

You can purchase the game on Good Old Games (GOG.)

I know, and I'm planning on getting it when my backlog of games frees up.

Ahh... Shogo Mobile Armor Division. I remmber playing this game a long time ago, then again when I felt nostalgia to play it years later. lol

The game was a spectacular Western spoof of mecha anime of the era, and a hell of a fun game to play. One thing I liked was the ability to transform your mecha to a mobile version of itself (like that of Macross). :)

One of the few reasons why it didn't do very well, though, was the overshadowing of other game series like Quake, Unreal, Heavy Gear, and even Monolith's own Blood series. The game got kind of shuffled under the radar amidst all those other stellar games releasing that same year. The much anticipated Half-Life coming out just a few weeks after Shogo's release didn't help either.

Yeah, I think that's the real reason it didn't do so well, commercially speaking.

Hopefully Monolith will consider making another Shogo game... and releasing it at an opportune time.

^Damn right! I still don't understand why the idea of mixing anime with FPS gameplay didn't catch on.

We'd have another F.E.A.R. long before Shogo.
