Something I've noticed about people is that while they think they are decent human beings, they are usually terrible. Which got me to thinking, if real life were an anime, would most people be the protagonist, or the villain? Maybe they'd start out a hero, but descend into becoming a monster?

As everyone knows, a shonen protagonist needs friends to obtain true power: but isn't that a bit mercenary? Isn't that basically choosing relationships by how much of a boost to your power level they can give? And if they are thus not true friends, how would you even obtain the power of friendship?

I also noticed in some threads here people talking about their dislike for others. While that might disqualify them for being a shonen protagonist, wouldn't that also make them a villain, as a disdain for humanity and the power of friendship being what they normally despise?

Given the power of a shonen protagonist, what would you do with it? What if you take the approach of doing nothing, of being neutral? Well, as we all know, a shonen protagonist always needs an upgrade because immediately after they use their latest one to defeat the Big Bad, a new Big Bad appears which requires a new power up to get it. And where do they get their power ups?

Namely from defeating and acquiring them from others. Which, in this scenario, might be YOU.

So, by default, you might be a villain. Or at least an antagonist.

The shonen world is rather terrible.

Then there is the idea of your own agency. A shonen protagonist never has their own ideas, beliefs, or values, usually following that of someone else or that of "the good of humanity." So what if you decide to use your power for your own ends?

Yep, you got it. No matter what those goals may be, the only people in shonen who use power to enforce their own beliefs are the villains.

Then there is the love interest. The usual shonen love interest is usually much weaker than the protagonist and a tool for their own power increase. Would you feel comfortable using someone like that? Would you also be comfortable not being to return their feelings (why hello there, every dense shonen MC ever).

So, you are plopped down in the shonen world. What would you do, and who would you become?

Protagonist? Villain? I'll take option C. The antihero.

I would be either a Protagonist like Gintoki, and do nothing all day or be an Anti hero. Since i'm sort of an anti hero in real life. I tend to strive for good resolutions to each conflict, but the way in which i try to achieve said good ending, is through means that are a bit more brutal/calculated and or one sided from my own point of view

I'd prefer to be the hidden villain, manipulating the main villain and the Protagonist from behind the scenes.

I'd be a background character. Even if I had shounen-like powers.

I'd be a supporting character like a Kakashi or a Krusty (Log Horizon). Someone people enjoy seeing around, but not necessarily someone who'd want to be a main character

If I were to be the main character, I would definitely not be one who is a paragon. I do things for my own personal benefit. people who read/watched would see me doing some good things, but the antagonist of my story would be neither a good guy nor evil guy, simply someone who conflicted with me.

I hope you realize that there are Shounen protagonists like Light Yagami (Death Note), Shinnosuke Nohara (Shin Chan), Claire (Claymore), Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star), Yuno Gasai (Mirai Nikki), Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis (Black Butler), Mugen and Jin (Samurai Champloo), and most of the main characters of Baccano.

Clearly, the requirements to be a Shounen protagonist are no where near as narrow as you say.

Yes, I can be, but I'd rather be a Seinen character. Either way, I'd simply be myself. I'd fit as a Chaotic Neutral antihero. I'm probably not interesting or likeable enough to cut it as a popular MC, so I'd likely be a supporting character. Given the right backstory and environment, I can rise to the plate as a fairly colorful supporting/main protagonist, or even antagonist.

It's a common misconception that protagonist = good guy, and that antagonist = villain.

I would try being a protagonist because they don't seem to ever die and always find a way through.

I would try to be a villain because they have deep thoughts on what they've done and why they've done it. A lot more thinking usually goes into the villains and their reasoning make a lot more sense than the classic, cliche hero/protagonist.

I would love to be the psychotic homicidal villain in a seinen anime instead.
