So I'm not sure if this would be considered general or anime (category) but I'll just take my chance on general. Really random question time , why do people ship?

example:

???x????

You all know what I mean that one couple you love for some reason. I've always been curious why ? (don't have a problem with people who do ship just curious )

I would have no clue as I have never felt the need to do it myself.

The simplest answer is:

Because we can.

Little fancier of an answer:

Sometimes shows don't give us a pair that we like together. Some shows don't give us an official pair at all. So we just want to show our appreciation of IF those pairs were put together.

Other times it is to scar the memories of the younglings who watch said shows and can never look at a show the same way again because of the damage Rule 34 will do when two people in fiction are paired off. Doujinshi can be a wonderfully horrific thing.

Because there are just some characters you just want them to be together! cause u like them both or u think they would make the cutest couple for example i would really like yozura and kodoka to be together, cause i actually like yozura, and i think she deserves to be happy with kodoka..plus they would make the cutest couple. its almost like twilight, team edward and team jacob... I still wanted her and jacob to get together... i would of liked to see an alternate ending with jacob. Cause i like jacob more than edward.

ITs almost like ur friend.. u want ur friend to be happy with the person they like/love.
I still root for sakura and naruto., sakura needs to hurry up and fall for naruto already before hinata does something drastic like kiss him, or worse naruto falls for hinata.

Because they don't know how to mind their own business and feel a constant need to meddle in other people's lives.. Even when said lives are fictional..

In my expert opinion (I'm an acclaimed shipologist, FYI), there are two key types of shipping.

Type1: "Wouldn't it be cute if...?"
This type is purely hypothetical, with little evidence to support the ship. The two characters could even be from different series, or have no romantic chemistry at all within their own world. There's no chance these characters would ever fall in love in the story, so you must ship.

Type 2: "Team _____!"
This type, while also hypothetical, has the potential to become real, and that can make it more appealing. This type can even spark passionate arguments. In short, "Which love interest should the character end up with?" Harry Potter is a common example, where he had multiple characters he could have feasibly married by the end of the series. Were you Team Hermione? Team Ginny? Team Cho?

Basically, shipping is fun speculation, similar to asking, "What will happen in the season finale?" or, "Who would win in a fight?"

Because we can't ship ourselves with anyone.

Nah, because I think we like the idea of love blossoming between two people who we enjoy seeing together.

No, I actually didn't even know what the word "ship" in this context meant until I scrolled down further in the discussion cuz I've never seen the word used that way. I was seriously thinking this was some sort of question about online shopping rather than anime pairings when I opened the topic xD.

Idk, maybe this is a sign I'm getting old at the age of 22...the youngins are using new slang I've never heard of . jkjk

People ship pairs because it's always fun to imagine what pairs go well together or to just have some unofficial shipped pair, though the show or manga doesn't specify on the relationship. It's also fun to make some ridiculous shipped pairs and have pairs that we think in our minds to be fun to watch by pairing favorite characters and uniquely different ones.

Because some of us, as people that enjoy witnessing romance blossom, have characters we believe make a good match together, yet we are disappointed that in the original work there's no straight forward declaration of their love(we shippers notice them, but since non-shippers don't, not sure if it would count as straight-forward), that we subconsciously start pairing them up. Simple as that.
Just like loving someone, it's not something you control, it is just something that comes to you.

Well, while I am a hardcore shipper (My Yuri-goggles need to be replaced real soon due to overuse), I'm not very good at explaining things well. Not to mention I'm sleep deprived.
Hope someone can explain this better.

Will also add some random personal opinion, that I can't consider people who take shipping as just something random and unimportant to be shippers.
Shipping is not something a true shipper takes lightly.
