Why do people ship?
Posted 6/21/14
*In Rintarou Okabe's voice*

I ship because:

There is undeniable chemistry between the two characters that I want to ship in the show that I watch... and... when the two are romantically linked in my mind, they complete one another..., and it gives me a great sense of pleasure to see two people together.

If two characters are similar in many ways where no one else sees it, then that is why I pair them together.
Rare/Crack/Dare-to-be-different pairings are my favorite.

I'm not a big shipper, and the pairings I do follow tend to be secondary/unpopular ones. But there's usually something that grabs me about certain characters. Or not...I've found myself drawn to those 'barely any screen time together yet I ship such-and-such' scenarios at times.

Because stories feel incomplete without an element of romance. I think we ship because it makes the story more complete.

I think I might even go so far as to say that stories are incomplete without love, so people will even "ship" things like mentor!NAME with student!NAME because platonic and familial love can be equally as important to making a story as romantic love.

Take for example, Usagi Drop. Very much an anime centered around familial love. As someone once put it, "It's like glove warmers for your heart." And then the added element of the romance between Daikichi and Yukari adds another layer to the story and makes it even more relatable.

Here's a wackier example, but one I'd still probably argue helps make the story: Haruka in Free! is in love with water. And it just makes the story work. If you took out the "HaruxMizu" ship, the anime would lose something. Even if you add other ships on top (as many of the fans of the anime do), that element is still there.

And of course, a little bit of the "What if...?" and "Wouldn't it be cute/funny/interesting...?" We humans like possibilities.

why do people ship?

Because I've invested time and emotions into these character and I wanna see it pay off!!!

I want these character to be super happy so I can get happy too and be like, "this IS AMAZING!!!"

So much win, then relieved

then have my inner fan smile just going off and re-watching and shipping some more

going off into la-la land *dazed off*

I love shipping and finding as many different ones as I can. However, I cannot speak for the others why they ship but the ones I have been told and my own.

1. Sometimes they want to put themselves and live the ideal romance with the character. Such as placing yourself as one of them because you really like the other character. It happens sometimes with otome games.

2. They might not have an ideal relationship and what's suppose to be like. So, they see the ship and find it as what they want in a relationship and how should it be.

3. It's simply fantasy. It makes your heart flutter into reading the romance and kinda like cheering them on and happens a bit in real life that you root for your friend to have success with their crush. It's only in your head and there's no harm, damage that comes into real life where reality does involve some conflict so you could create a happy ending.
4 {I suppose this goes for partly 3 as well...}. It can be a distraction for what is going in life. Seeing what you find cute in your eyes helps bring a smile.

Because it is better to enjoy a ride on the ship rather than be left behind on the shore even if the ship is destine to crash and burn. Btw the SS Onodera will never crash.
