Ceewayne is right on the money! Also, be sure to bring some cash--heaven knows when you might get a chance to eat!--and some breath mints, since you'll probably spend your first day talking to a lot of people.

Also, let's see if I can remember this old quote correctly, which I think comes from a Jimmy Stewart movie: "'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart--I recommend pleasant."

Congrats and good luck!

That movie is called Harvey

And I would recommend to pretty much anybody.
If anybody hasn't seen Harvey, do so, though I don't know where to find it.

I just recently got a full-time job and tomorrow is my first proper day as an employee. I'm nervous as all hell and I figured I'd make this thread as I'm sure everybody has been there at least once.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself before (any of) your first day(s) at work?

Again, I'm SO happy for You!

I would simply say be confident. And if it's a position that You begin to love, don't be afraid to brown-nose Your higher-ups. A little bit of confidence, mixed with a little bit of "kiss-ass" can get You a long way!

If it is customer service, lower your standards on how much credit you give humanity. I never thought some people could be so dumb until after i became a cashier.

Agree 100%. This is way I'm trying to get a new job.

1. Show up a little early. I recommend at lease 10-15 min. everyday, plus it will help just in case you run in to traffic.
2. Keep you personal and work life separate.
3. If you don't understand something, ask for help. Don't try to figure it out by yourself, most of the time that makes things worse.

1. Be relaxed and confident (impossible id say but try
2. Just stay focused and do your work
3. The making friends and conversation will come as you go through your job..
4. Ask lots of questions helps relieve the tension you have inside of you and helps you relax and make conversation.
5. Just be yourself!!! (very important) no one likes a person who is trying too be someone there not just because there trying to impress others on their first day :(
Finally smile and be thankful for this opportunity and that's about it good luck to my CR peeps on their first day at work..

You're right, it was Harvey. It's been years since I've seen it, but that quote still resonates. . .

Oh, Koko, how'd that first day go, anyhow?

Always be early and prepared. Be confident and be yourself. Ask for feedback regarding your performance and in what areas should you improve. Be positive.

My advice is: be assertive. Once you're used to how things are run, be sure not to let people walk over you. If someone sees you as as a walking mat, they'll take full advantage of you. There's nothing wrong with pushing yourself and showing you're capable, but don't let them think you're there to do all the work. Good luck!

How did your first day go? Were you like Harlen Ellison on his first day working for Disney?

"Wear a tie, you idiot" or "Make sure to wear proper shoes"
Plus other things, but I'd have to go into detail.

Don't do like i did at my first job.

For the first week I called my boss Tonya and her name was actually Toni. I misheard it in the first few minutes and no one corrected me, until i seen it written down on a paper and asked a co-worker about it.
