Does it really matter? Lately, we've been seeing issues with names like the Redskins, and even calling African American's black. But does being 'politically correct' really matter at all?

I'm of the opinion that the context is what is important. That political correctness, mincing words, doesn't achieve anything if we don't fix the context. Besides, once upon a time, terms like redskins, blacks, or even the dread Negros, were not offensive terms. They were just like the now accepted term African Americans, or Native Americans. Shocking, right? Turns out they were just words used to talk about people of a certain nationality, no more offensive than calling a person born, raised, and of Japanese descent a Japanese person. It was like calling the Queen British. Not offensive.

To further drop your jaw to the floor....it was humanity who made these terms offensive. Wow.

to be honest. The more someone tells me not to use a word... the more i want to. Half the time the people arguing we shouldn't say certain things, are those "Tumblr crusaders" who take offense to any and everything.

Calling a black person black is not an insult. But if a white person does it, it is. Because political correctness only applies to certain groups of people.. isn't that funny?

i cant even use the word black because people will call me racist. but they can sure use the term "white people". Since only white heterosexuals can be offensive.

If you are insulted by a term describing you, then you probably should go live on an island by yourself.

Its getting ridiculous now. Apparently, calling someone gay, is offensive to gay people. Why is it offensive to call somebody what they are?

The only time i actually dislike when people use these sorts of terminology (black, redneck, redskins, white people, gay) is when its being used in an offensive way.

There is nothing wrong with a word. Its simply a word. It can become inappropriate however, depending on the way you use it and how its received by the other party.

People in todays world, have such thin skin that it isn't even funny. People take offensive to everything and make the biggest deal out of the smallest thing.

I'm white, and heterosexual; and i never take offensive when someone says "Hey you! white straight guy! go back to...canada!".

I'm afraid we're out of the rat. Would you care to substitute a "Flying *Censored*?'

If you're in America, you should go back to Canada. So much better.

i don't mix with people enough to come across such things that people find an issue

(I'm going to copy and paste some of my take on it from the Washington Redskins thread that applies to this one...)

Political Correctness can kiss my ass.

Moving on.

Inspired by this nonsense going on I'd like to further state that hiding something does not diminish the problem. Covering it up lets the problem escalate and thrive in the shadows. Facing whatever it is head on instead of covering it up and trying to make it "nicer" like how it happens in society pretty much globally solves nothing.

Political correctness is not being polite. It is a way of lying, it is a deception, it is false mannerisms and a false front and it is another right being taken away from people and from society. By inculcating this in society, the government is just telling you what they want you to do, telling you to act the way they think is best, telling you to think the way they think. This is freedom with a blindfold and a hand guiding you to where they want you to go. This is a form of control under the guise of a pretty phrase.

There are many things like this happening worldwide in society today. Do not let this control you. Always speak your mind.

During the holidays last year, I was trying to think up some fun holiday events for my gaming guild. My one member goes "you can't use this, you cant use that because its not politically correct"

and I'm here thinking, ... "Do I look like the president of the USA? No I don't there for I don't need to be politically correct. Who cares if I use this." I mean seriously who cares?

This topic comes up on occasion, and has been moved to Extended (and the previous thread about this has been locked / redirected to this one, since it's been several months since the last post in it).

Political correctness doesn't solve the problems of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. It's only a mask to hide the issues, like how ostriches bury their heads underneath the dirt to avoid danger. In fact, I believe it only encourages more ignorance. Seriously, people really need to grow a backbone and some thicker skin. This is from a generation when being called a fag did not mean you were a homosexual.
