Why do guys play as female characters?

I always get annoyed when guys play as female and more so when they try to steal money from other male members.

It hasn't happened to me yet but I can see that happening and although i respect their choice, but some of the comments I've seen was that, guys can't stand looking at male character's figure the whole time?
That's seriously ... I can't even fathom to say it

And now, i feel so sorry for the female gamers nowadays because most gamers think that female characters are G.I.R.L. (Guy in real life) so basically they barely get any respect unless they somehow get to know people.

At least have the courage to play as your own gender once in awhile, the dream to make a male paladin to protect other players.

I'd rather play as a female character for the reasons you can't fathom.

Have you seen a Monster Hunter? The guys look kinda cool in a lot of the armor, right? But the girls are a lot more fun to look at.

In MMOs, where I talk and meet other players frequently, I would like people to pick their respective gender, but I understand if they don't, and why would you give players money just because they're female? The ****? It's not like they have to work harder for the same payout.

Tera, Scarlet Blade, etc. Focus almost exclusively in the female models and apparel, they just look sexier, and sexy is a plus for everyone, especially in a T-M video game.

I do select male characters for items, armor, weapons and so on, that only they can acquire.
I also pick male characters if it's not a "create your own" type deal.

It's better to stare at a female character than a guy. Especially when the female is a cutie, for example I bought FF12 ARR just for the cat girls. So for obvious reasons I'm going to play as a girl, with nekomimi of course!

In RPGs it's easier for me to think from the perspective of another person and do things that fall outside of my own real-life motivations if I make my character extremely different from me. I always play a broad spectrum of different kinds of characters. Male, female, human, non-human. I find that if I play as a male human I tend to think like myself and do what I would normally do, so I have to sort of force myself to role play the character concept I came up with.

Sometimes, especially with Bioware, it's an issue of voice acting. Male Shepard's voice grates on my nerves and I wouldn't be able to play through a whole game having to listen to him.

I don't really do MMOs though, so it's never an issue of fooling other people. When I did play a few MMOs it was for the persistent world, not social interaction with other players, so I always kept to myself or with a small group of friends. My SWTOR characters were split evenly male and female. My favourites were a female Bounty Hunter, female Smuggler, and male Inquisitor.

Actually, on the other side of the spectrum it annoys me when I play a female character and when someone finds out I'm a guy, they just start acting like I'm doing something wrong. My female characters are usually not my first character. Hell, there are two reason why I have female characters in Guild Wars 2.
1. I have enough male characters and thought I needed diversity
2. I like the female voice acting, especially for the asura

In MMORPGs, sometimes I play as a female character and sometimes I play as a male character. It's not like I am trying to scam anyone. I just pick a gender, class and race that I happen to like the look and abilities of. If someone asks what my gender is, I am not going to lie about it.

Why would my gender even matter unless you are trying to hit on me for whatever reason?

In some MMORPGS, guys actually treat girl players better. So maybe they play as girls to take advantage of their kindness? I dunno

I pick female characters because I enjoy looking at them more. Monster Hunter is a perfect example, and any case where I can customize the appearance of a character, it's usually alot more fun to customize the appearance of a female character than a male one.

As for getting free stuff or money or whatever, why in the world would anyone give someone money just because they're female anyway, regardless of what their real life gender is, that's not equality now, is it.

Let's be fair, it's far more annoying being on the receiving end all the time when you'd rather not be. But I've also taken advantage of them, because why not. If you're gonna offer to be an idiot and give me things, why not take you for a ride. Teach someone a lesson and benefit from it.

One thing I've noticed when hopping from MMORPG to MMORPG? I don't see this sort of behavior in World of Warcraft. I saw it in Final Fantasy XI, Rift, The Old Republic, Final Fantasy XIV and I'm sure I'd probably have seen it in Guild Wars 2 had I played it long enough. But there are so many guys and girls in World of Warcraft and people play whatever the hell they want that I never see that sort of behavior in that game. It's weird.

That's just poor reasoning Kunami
Just because a person is oblivious to some things and perhaps desperate for love -- though they should know better that MMORPG is still internet -- and annoy you doesn't mean that you can trick them. It's still taking advantage but hey, it's the internet. No one knows who you are.

No, it's not poor reasoning. But you are right about one thing. This is the internet and no one knows who you are, so it's really irrelevant if the person on the other end is a girl or not. You're not seeing them, you're merely taking their avatar at face value. If you're bothered by finding out that they are not what they play, then that's your hangup and problem, not theirs. You need to get over it.

Most of the time, people grow up and grow out of this. Sometimes, sadly, they do not. I'm not losing sleep over taking advantage of fools in these sorts of games when I need to (I guess, by your logic and based on my gender, I'm not taking advantage of them, but it still feels like it to me). Though, again, I tend to play an MMORPG where people don't do this. In Warcraft, people tend to just assume you're a guy whether you have a male avatar or not.

Even if you are, there's still the "hidden" part of it. Regardless if you don't feel sad about it, others will. Though, that's an advantage for you since your name won't follow you everywhere because it's the internet like you said.

But don't even try to speak as if you're adult. I've met lots of fantastic adults who lived life with honor without the need to trick other people.

And it is poor reasoning no matter what version you look at it.

You are taking advantage of people and you're making yourself look like the victim which clearly you are not.

I... umm, wow, okay. I don't mean to be insulting, but it just became very apparent that I'm having a conversation with a child (age 17, so truly, it's not meant to marginalize or insult) and cannot really put myself in the same histrionic mindset you have right now. Maybe half my life ago, but not anymore.

I'll just say it once more and be done with it. This is your problem, not anyone else's. You will grow up some day, Capio, and find out how little this matters in the grand scheme of things and just how creepy you come off in these games to the people who are actually girls just trying to enjoy their game. Most of them do not want to be flirted with or doted on anymore than you do, so if you find yourself taken advantage of? Consider it karma doing its job.

I'm out.

I don't think that's really taking advantage of anyone though. Generally speaking this stuff is a random gift or proposition for aid from the one who is assuming the other player is female, the other player is simply accepting the gift.

There's no obligation to provide companionship or any deep relationship involved here, so there likewise is no taking advantage of anyone, it's essentially just a random act of kindness, accepted, with potential ulterior motives, unmentioned, and thus ignored..

But he clearly does. Hence the thread.
