I love 80's anime. It definitely holds a special place in my heart and I feel like it doesn't get the recognition it deserves from the majority anime community of today. Nowadays the anime community is dominated by a younger crowd, so they don't even give older anime a second glance. Sometimes they even overlook great shows from the 90's. But I'd like to focus on AWESOME shows and OAVs from the 80's. Now, they might be cheesy in some aspects, but I think that's what makes some of the stuff that came out in the 80's so great. So let me hear you favorites!

Megazone 23
Space Runaway Ideon
Golgo 13: The Professional
Robotech
Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Lupin III Part III
Vampire Hunter D
Dirty Pair
Amon Saga
MD Geist
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise
Wicked City
Bubblegum Crisis
Devilman
Yōtōden
Crystal Triangle

Maison Ikkoku. Preferred the manga, but god...What a classic. An absolute classic.

I love a lot of 80's anime too!

I wasn't around in the 80's, but this show still rates high on my list and is still quite popular. The classic.

I definitely love DBZ and Dragon Ball! I just wanted to list the things some fans may not have heard of. Hence why I didn't mention Akira or Mobile Suit Gundam.

Bobby's Girl
A 1985 OAV that's worth checking out. It's very hard to find, but I believe if you just Google it, you should find it floating on the web...

Own a lot of 80s anime on VHS

A lot by Studio Nue

Anyways the best 80's anime is Macross: Do You Remember Love

Others:
Dirty Pair, Tank Police, Wicked City, Golgo 13, Megazone 23, Mospeada Genesis Climber, Orgus 2
(except Megazone 23 of which I own on DVD, and Mosepeada which I don't own, I have the rest on VHS and those tapes are still holding up good!)

DBZ of course

and, though it started in '79, Rose of Versailles. Truly a classic, made a big impact on shoujo manga.

Even though it came out in 1990, I want to mention Cyber City Oedo 808. Something about it just keeps me coming back! I think a big part of it is the dub. It makes it some kinda special, that's for sure ha ha.

Okay, some obscure favorites.

Sonic Soldier Borgman:

Devil Hunter Yohko:

(added bonus, dub voice actor if the main heroine is the same voice for DIC's dub of Serena/Sailor Moon!)

Windaria

The edit was bad, but a very sad story.

Angel's Egg by Mamoru Oshii (1985) is by far one of the best puzzle films I've ever seen.

It had me going like this for a couple days...

For stuff that actually feels like that 80s anime niche though:

GAR:

Riki-Oh: The Wall of Hell (1989). People explode when you punch them. It's awesome.

Ninjas:

Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma (1989). I love old ninja stuff, this was a great one.

Demons, Sex(ism) and Violence:

Demon City Shinjuku (1988).
Goku: Midnight Eye (1989).
Goku II: Midnight Eye (1989).
Maryuu Senki / Evil Dragon War Chronicles (1987-89).
Wicked City (1987).

Cyberpunk:

Appleseed (1988). Based on the story by Masamune Shirow.
Black Magic M-66 (1987). Based on the story by Masamune Shirow.
Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 (1987). Bad story, but nice visuals.

Fantasy:

Amon Saga (1986).
Arion (1986). Loosely based on highly unfactual Greek mythology, not that great but it exists.
Legend of Lemnear (1989). Satoshi Urushihara drew the manga, so it's practically porn.

Music:

TO-Y (1987). Neat story about the Japanese rock music scene in the late 80s.

Space Horror:

Good Morning Althea (1987).
Hell Target (1987). This one's an Alien clone, which was interesting.
Roots Search (1986). Neat premise, awful everything else though.

^ These range from not great to actually shitty, but entertaining if you're in the mood.

Mecha Horror:

Cybernetics Guardian (1989).
Daimajuu Gekitou Hagane no Oni / Demon of Steel (1987).

Space Mecha:

Five Star Stories (1989).
Relic Armor Legaciam (1987).

Supernatural Shoujo Mystery:

Deimos no Hanayome (1988).

Science Fiction:

Terra e... / Toward the Terra (1980). Espers fight for peace with a humanity that wants to destroy them. MASSIVELY condensed to fit inside two hours, this got an anime adaptation in 2007. Not sure if the series is any good or not.

There's a bunch others I have on a list to see if I can find anywhere but a good number of them are 90s.

Some of my favorites were Dragonball/Dragonball Z, a lot of the Gundam stuff which came out in the 70's-90's, and... well that is all I remember off the top of my head, most of what I watched I didn't differ from regular old cartoons growing up so it's hard to remember what I watched that was actually Anime or not.

Heh. I own the OVA collections for that. Makes me kind of nostalgic as they were some of the first anime DVD's I owned. They did however come out in the 90's.

I was thinking of throwing 3x3 eyes up here myself as it is one of my favorite from around that era, but even though the manga series started in the 80's the first OVA didn't come out until '91.
