Have you enjoyed schadenfreude, that is, pleasure derived from the misery of others? Or perhaps just unfortunate things happening to others? Is schadenfreude a bad thing?

I fear I do on a regular basis. Such as a man on a bike trying to pull off a trick and falling over while I drive by. My response? Laughing. Or a younger friend of mine dropping the one treat she was allowed for the day on the floor, ruining it. My response? Once more, laughing my butt off.

I read this article on Dailymail.co.uk, and there was this article about how a woman who lost her virginity at age 51 with her third husband. And I found it hysterical...

So, the first husband she married was so religious he wouldn't think about doing it. Then the second husband was too old...
And she kept waiting until he died... and with her third husband at 51 years old, she finally lost her virginity.

I don't know if i'm laughing at her misery or the fact that she's so loyal she didn't think of running away with the plumber or something. If I were her... there's no way in the world I would keep myself pure for 51 years...

I especially enjoy it when the police pull over the idiot fools that love to tailgate and drive insanely by weaving and hard breaking to get 10 feet further ahead. I have slowed down and pointed and laughed at them. To where they both saw and heard me. So yes, I do enjoy the schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude is really just a fancier word for Sadism... sort of...

If we are getting technical Sadism is the person causing the pain (to any living thing really) and getting pleasure from it.

Schadenfreude is a bit more direct, in that it is getting pleasure from other peoples misfortune, whether caused directly or by another source.

YES I realize the definitions are a bit more fancier than that but we don't really care now do we.

well if someone's got blood running down his/her face then i'm probably not going to laugh

but general misfortune, such as running into a pole (which i have done before... lol), yes, it can be pretty funny.

Getting more technical,
Sadism is the quality of enjoying the exhilarating sensation from causing pain on others.
The person him/herself is a Sadist.
Usually the one that can dish it out but can't take it.
Schadenfreude is finding pleasure in other's misfortune-
whether it be from tripping on a pebble or merciless slaughter.
And-
correct me if I'm wrong, but
I think it also applies to the person him/herself.
