i think what happens with long-running series is that the mangakas draw up a story with its ending in mind, and when it becomes super popular they have to add a bunch of arcs , milk it until it's dry, and even then pull the rag until it is torn, and then put the ending. Which is probably different than they originally set it out to be.

That's probably spot on

Well In most stories, but I have noticed more in anime that they always give hints for everything. Anything that is shown is connected to the plot, except things like panties, but The comic artist and his assistants proved me wrong on that note though. No ending is truly a surprise the hints are everywhere, even in Harry Potter in the first book he lets out a snake that snake comes back in the last book. So they definitely have a pretty good idea how they want the story to progress and end.

There's probably no doubt that the storyline of HP was already finnished in the creator's mind before she decided to write it down.
It seems like this isn't always the case with manga and anime though, that's why i made the thread.

I think anime like Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is a good example of a story that was finnished to some extent before chapter 1 got released.
Naruto, One piece and Bleach also have those hints, so they probably had the basic idea of what they wanted to do, but they also added stuff they didn't think they would because of the popularity

I cant find the Bleach Manga anywhere on the internet (that picks up directly where the anime ended) so i dont know about bleach. If you are up to date with Naruto it really seems like Kishi has a general idea of where he wants to go sometimes and other times it seems like he is just pulling something out of his ass to meet his weekly deadlines.

p.s. If anyone knows where I can read bleach starting from chapter 460 please hook me up thanks! ;)

Naming sources that don't have legit rights to the material they provide access to is against the very first of CR's site rules so please don't ask for this. I've removed responses that included that information, as well as your subsequent post that made it very clear that not-legit sites was exactly what you were asking for.

Hmm... dunno bout the long runners really... well or actually even the short stories. But I would assume they would have at least quite a bit of the story if not written down, the general idea in their head. At least up through whatever current arc they are doing.

A part of me though just thinks they half ass it every chapter and hope their ranking and sales stay the same or get better.

I think the real asspulls went by unnoticed...

Stories are often planned from beginning to end, but get affected by commercial incentives and end up being dragged by either adding additional arcs post-ending (Death Note) or by extending the ending itself (Detective Conan). Sometimes it is obvious, and other times it is not. However when a series becomes popular it is bound to happen, and the author's willingness to comply determines to what extent it will be changed.

It can differ from publisher to publisher and author to author, but since rankings are really important in magazines and cancellations incredibly probable, even with an idea planned out, alterations may have to be made in order to keep the series' popularity or to gain more popularity in order to avoid getting the ax. In is not unheard of for series' to completely change ( including genre) in order to attempt avoiding cancellation. There are many series' out there that actually don't have much planning in them beforehand, and the creator is just thinking up new ideas by a weekly/monthly basis. As for giving hints to certain things in future chapters? Sometimes the author will reread past chapters in order to find something that they can relate to future chapters, which will make it seem more planned out as well as hopefully gaining some more votes/popularity for that week/month etc.

Eiichiro Oda:

"I only have the ending of One Piece in my mind, and nothing else. But knowing the end point, I weave the story and make story arcs that build up to it."

Oda knows the ending and that's it, however, I really admire how much effort he puts into connecting the overarching story and the many sub-stories together. I like how the world feels dynamic and keeps growing, and the small links between past/present arcs, foreshadowing etc.
