I believe the term "adult cartoons" has it roots on pornography. after all, cartoons were only created mainly focused to a younger audience. but, since cartoons (at least in my opinion) are a way to exaggerate reality to either create a fictional world to entertain others or to express ones imagination or to transmit feel or emotion, aren't cartoons then meant to any age in general?

Yes, what is generally meant outside Japan when the term "anime" is invoked qualifies as cartooning. Yes, some (but not all) cartoons are directed at adults. So technically those anime series which are geared toward an adult audience qualify as "adult cartoons" while those which are geared toward children are "children's cartoons". And yes, that's a phrase you'd probably best avoid, partly because of the potential for association with the phrase "adult film" (which refers to pornographic movies), and partly because there are in fact anime which actually are geared toward children.

There you go, OP! I think I hit all the major bases.

Depends on the anime I guess... But no.

Instead of anime, hentai would be a better choice to be considered adult cartoon, either way I still don't consider anime adult cartoons

No, because anime isn't necessarily for adults. Heck, a large percentage of anime are aimed towards kids and teens, so it's anything BUT "adult" cartoons.

No, because that would be a generalization that all anime features mature content. Yes, there are anime out there that are obviously geared towards a mature audience, but there are also plenty out there that I would love to show to my kids if i ever have any. Take Kobato for example. I would love to show that to my daughter if I ever have one.

Also, if you see the majority of anime nowadays taking place in middle/high school or has a teenager as an MC, its kind of obvious that its geared more towards a teenage age group, so not necessarily adults.

What is the difference between an anime like Soul Eater and an animated cartoon?

No, adult anime like hentai or R.

When I think of adult cartoons, I just think of more complex/mature plot lines. Not pornographic content. Like, I would consider Cowboy Bebop an adult cartoon. However, I think adult and mature are synonymous as well as cartoons and anime.

But judging by what people are saying in this thread, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
