I figured it was something like that, but doesn't that simply mean that in this context the word "anime" refers to animated cartoons originating from Japan? The definition of an animated cartoon is not dependent on a work's place of origin.

pretty much any promotional material can tell you the difference.

anime tends to go for a more stylized/idealized but realistic style of animation.

this is not the case 100% of the time, because sometimes they do go for unrealistic animation styles for a comedic effect.

this is because anime was mostly influenced by classical disney animations, which were often portrayed as more realistic, or were often done by rotoscoping.

cartoon is meant to depict a form of animation that does not have such a realistic artistic styling... or it looks "cartoony" as the phrase has become.

Adult anime would pretty much be hentai.

Personally, anime is still cartoons to me just for any age group, it comes with different styles in animation, and comes from a different country.

These type threads won't die.

I see anime as Japanese animation...because that's what it is.

Cartoons in the West typically refer to Western animation.

Therefore anime is not cartoons in my eyes, let alone "adult cartoons."

Sure, anime can be mature but they have different titles for it like josei and seinen.

And sure, cartoons can heavily borrow elements (art style, storytelling style, etc.) predominately seen in anime, but Western animation can never be Japanese animation.

In some instances maybe, but that's just it...not all Anime are put out for Adults. So, I don't think as a "blanket term" that would be the best Option.

Then you'd be wrong. Anime is the literal definition of cartoon, that is "a film or television show made by photographing a series of drawings : an animated film or television show"

no. cartoons and anime are both subsets of animation, but are not the same thing.

No, they're not. They're both words that means a film or TV show is animated. Anime is short for "animation". It's a descriptive word, not a genre. Here in the west it's perfectly correct to call anime "Japanese Cartoons". In Japan, they'd call things like Spongebob Squarepants and Avatar: The Last Airbender something long the lines of "西のアニメ", that is "nishi no anime", which means "Western anime". Or more correctly, "Western Cartoons".

"Cartoon" and "anime" are not genres, they are not styles, they are two different names for the same concept of making moving images through the use of rapidly displaying series of drawings. It's completely alright to use anime to refer to Japanese cartoons, because it's easier to distinguish them that way. But don't say anime is something else than cartoons. It is not. You can say anime is different from Western cartoons, that's acceptable and understandable. You can't say anime aren't cartoons at all, because that's just plain wrong. Anime means cartoon, cartoon means anime. The difference between them is lingual, not technical.

No.
Cartoons made for children can be watched by all ages and it is immature to think otherwise.

I mean, yeah, there are many animes that focus on a more mature audience and I consider them adult cartoons. Adult doesn't just mean porn.

I see anime and cartoons as a medium, some cartoons are made for adults, some anime is made for kids. I will say anime can get much darker than most cartoons, but I've seen some pretty messed up cartoons too.
