You buy it because you want to collect it. If you don't want to collect it, you don't buy it. And if you buy it, you aren't silly enough to pay MSRP, you pay around $30 for a "$40" DVD, because the extra $10 is for big box store mark-up if its sold in bricks and mortar store ~ the Japanese creators get the same royalty and the home video distributor get the same encouragement to continue releasing on US home video whether you pay $40 at .... uh, wherever you would go to do that, or $30 at RightStuf.

If you just want to watch it, watch it streaming.

Aniplex streams on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Daisuki, so its not like you are losing out on watching it if you don't buy it. They decide what the collectors market will pay for the series, and charge accordingly. Fate/Zero, $70 (real price, MSRP $90) for a full broadcast season, Madoka Magica $30 (real price, MSRP $40) per four episode DVD disk. More for both for Blu Ray.

Okay. No. I hear this all the time, and just no. This is not a thing. Just because it is more expensive in Japan does NOT mean anything what so ever. That type of business strategy does NOT fly in the US. Bandai did this same idiotic thing, and they had freaking Gundam, and where are they now when it comes to US licensing? They aren't around any more and now they have a bunch of series stuck in limbo. When I can get whole series of Funimation for the same damn price (and usually less) on Blu-Ray, then I have to raise an eyebrow. Four episodes for $40... Kill-la-Kill is 24 episodes, meaning the whole series comes out to freaking $250!!! I can buy FIVE full volumes (minimum of 12 episodes per volume) on Blu-Ray from Sentai Filmworks for that price, and due to sales on Amazon, probably about 5-10 volumes of anime from Funimation for that price. So... I just have two words to say to that... Screw Aniplex. They aren't going to rape my wallet when their competitors offer more for less. Quality be DAMNED. Aniplex may have the best video quality, but their quality is not $200 better than the average series from Funimation or Sentai.

Oh. And Aniplex can take their monopolistic price fixing to the fiery pits of hell. They only let a handful of companies sell their material so they can more easier control their prices instead of having, say, Amazon sell their things at a mark down. I am SO glad that when FMA: Brotherhood came out it was before Aniplex sold their own things, and I was actually able to buy the whole series for $70. Pretty damn good for two volumes of Blu-Ray of a series that was 64 episodes long. If it was Aniplex selling it, it would probably cost over $300. :/

I'm honestly indifferent about this question. I just really waned to use this pic.

Yeah, I'd even argue that Sentai is too high. Up here in New England, you get seasons for $60-70, and I can't help but think if they could consistently get the price down to $30 DVD or $40 Blu-ray they'd sell a lot more. It gets it back into the realm of impulse buy. Aniplex I don't even bother with.

This kind of first-world problem seems rather inconsequential in light of all the free and legal streaming options we've got.
