What a disappointment. Barakamon looks like something I'd really like to see. Very few of the other titles Crunchyroll has announced appeal to me. This could be a very dismal season.

Thus, my day came to an end without a good announcement.

There have been some shows that were on both, not sure if its a money issue or funi being dicks or what.

For those hoping CR could obtain Funimation's "unused" rights to programs, the problem is that Funimation sees CR as a direct competitor in the streaming business.

Even though sub-licensing rights to CR for countries outside of the US and Canada (or perhaps just outside of English-speaking countries) wouldn't directly impact Funimation's streaming business, it would make CR stronger overall.

The one thing we can hope for is that eventually the potential license from doing so will become sufficient that they couldn't leave that money on the table. Of course, there is always the chance at that point they might set up there own international operation.

And with no NA streaming for Barakamon, I suppose there's a chance that FUNi has it? This was a show I was looking forward to, so I'm hoping it streams somewhere.

It seems very likely, given that the UK and Ireland were specifically excluded from Europe. For those in the UK, hopefully Animax UK will have it.

On a positive note, there was no mention of being restricted to only French and German speaking countries in Europe, so hopefully those in the other countries included will be able to view with English subtitles if they chose (which was apparently also the case with Ping Pong).

But what would happen in the case of Latin America, Funimation always blocks us their series and never released their homemade videos, CR can not make the attempt to reach an agreement with them.

As I explained in the first part of my message, while it wouldn't impact Funimation's streaming business here, it would make CR stronger overall, so Funimation has a reason not to do it.

The better solution at this point would be for the licensor in Japan to change how they carve up regions, at least for streaming. If they offered Funimation a contract that excluded streaming rights (or all rights) for Latin America, I seriously doubt they would turn it down.

I hope that Funimation stop increasing their number of simulcast because it is really pissing me off how a show can't be available in Latin America just because Funimation purchase its rights for both North and South America but stream it to US and Canada only.

Sorry for my English...

Take the license for the whole america, then release the show only for north america and block everyone else. And do not let others streaming site pick it up in the most cases. Where us don't have too many options to see the anime legally. Really great Funi.

When will they stop doing that?

Especially since Funimation is likely not asking for Latin American rights ...

.... indeed, its quite possible that the Japanese licensor originally decided to add Latin America to North America as the simplest way to grant Latin American rights in response to an earlier offer from Crunchyroll ... which then backfired because it was Funimation that got the title, who didn't have the slightest interest in Latin American rights and wasn't including any value from Latin America rights as part of its offer.

When will they stop doing that?

When the Japanese licensors

(1) stop bundling Latin American rights with North American rights, OR

(2) stop including exclusive streaming rights past the first week,

Or else when Funimation:

(3) signs a package deal with Crunchyroll allowing Crunchyroll to stream to Latin America when Funimation has the rights (in return for royalties), for those series where obtains the materials and language rights for streaming elsewhere in the world.
