Muv-Luv Total Eclipse.

I went into it completely unfamiliar with the source material and the first 2-3 episodes were pure, distilled awesomeness that just slammed into the densest wall of suck ever at a speed of 300 million m/s.

Open letter to anyone who feels the same way as the above guy: Read the Muv-Luv visual novels.

It is a 3 part trilogy, in the order: Extra, Unlimited, and Alternative.

Extra is pretty skippable. If you must, force yourself through one of the routes to get a general idea of the 'normal' world. Unlimited can be considered skippable, however I would STRONGLY recommend reading at least one of the routes. Alternative is where it is all at though. Those feels of pure distilled awesomeness come from Alternative. The guy who wrote Alternative wrote those few episodes. That feeling, that tone, that ljahdakudghakuyfgaYES? It's alternative. However, Unlimited provides a lot of context for Alternative, which is why I advised against skipping it.

Muv-Luv Alternative is generally considered one of the greatest visual novels of all time, so it is well worth a read. Though because of a CERTAIN PARTICULAR SCENE THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE TRAUMATISED ME try to get the version with gore reduction (its literally just for that one scene but seriously do it ._.).

tl;dr read good visual novels not terrible adaptations (examples: little busters, muv luv (unfair, muv luv anime was adapted from a light novel spinoff), fate/stay night)

________

Back on track: Someone already mentioned sword art online, so damn. Hmm... Kill la Kill. I can measure the number of minutes I lasted on one hand. The art style was dated and was genuinely a terrible artistic choice, the action was maximum low budget and not even impressive to watch, and the lack of any semblance of direction made me drop it like its hot. (snoopdoggdance.gif) For a series that got so much hype I cant even comprehend where it came from; unlike sword art online, which in the first half at least had a good premise behind it, and a somewhat understandable setting for the target audience (also had Yuki Kajiura doing the OST and that was actually the reason I watched it lol)

Don't forget Dangan Ronpa. The visual novel was excellent, perhaps not very challenging, but excellent nonetheless. The anime was an absolutely terrible adaptation that (in my opinion) should never have been made in the first place just because of the nature of the visual novel.

How was School Days disappointing?

I just thought it was your usual slice of life until I actually watched it and got good laughs at the ending.

I can't imagine any other anime that I'd been disappointed than SAO arc 2.

Sword Art Online--When Kirito and Asuna got together.
Beyond the Boundary--All of it.
Kill la Kill--No.
Blue Exorcist--Eh.
Bleach--Ugh.
One Piece--Ugh.
Say "I Love You"--Cliched.
Kids on the Slope--Too slow.
Soul Eater--It never took itself seriously.
Vampire Knight--When Yuuki lost all autonomy she never really had. And her backstory with Kaname.

My issue is I tend to fall into the age old trap of reading a Manga before an Anime. It happens also when I read books before seeing the movie equivalent. I have to often step back and think. Would I have liked this had I not read the print version first, and often the answer is yes. If I can go in not expecting something to be a direct port of a book I'm good.

If I had to choose an Anime that fit into the topic, It would be Blackbird. It started interesting enough and rapidly devolved into Female Protagonist Stockholming into Bella from Twilight . I watched up until
and she only got worse.

Other similar genre things don't tend to rub me the wrong way, Diabolik Lovers anyone? But I felt brain cells frying when I was watching Blackbird.

Yeah, I used to read the manga version of Black Bird up until a certain point.
I thought it was okay but then, like you said, it started to spiral into Twilight and when she was crying all over the place...I had to stop. Misao had absolutely no agency whatsoever and everyone trying to kill her just got annoying.

Haven't seen Mirai Nikki so I can't comment on that. But, nah, School Days was exactly what it was supposed to be. With a great ending to boot. Yeah the characters were detestable, that was the point.

Puella Magi Modoka Magica

The story wasn't all that engaging. Sayaka had the most interesting character development, and
didn't have any sympathy for any of the characters either. Felt like no one was developed enough and they were all dumb for getting themselves in their shitty situations
