No Game No Life made a lot. And their is a whole genre of reference humor in anime.

But I'm not here to talk of references.

More anime reference Gundam than any other show.

I realized this while watching a slice of life, and the ending episode preview ended with "And you will see the tears of time"

From Zeta Gundams ending previews.

While No Game No Life certainly made references to other shows/games ect I was surprised when it literally made a reference a focal point of the entire ending of the series.

I suppose I should also bring Outbreak Company into the picture while discussing this. I was primarily over looking more recent anime while coming up with the short list.

I think One Piece has a really good reference to other things (not necessarily other anime, but other literary works, people, history etc).

From memory, since I watched those 500+ episodes like a long time ago...

So the Lightning God guy... he's actually from a Japanese folktale... (I knew this because I was watching an anime on CR called Japanese folktale and that picture of a Lightning God came up and it looked exactly like him... with the drums and stuff).
The underwater palace... this Japanese folktale is referenced in a lot of anime actually. Mermaids (This is more a Western literary reference combined with the Ryugu-jo story.

The 400 years missing history, it's like a reference to the Dark Ages (real life history) where literary works that weren't praising a deity were burnt down and erased from humankind's history.

The Amazon women. Medusa (from Greek Mythology); one of the character [Boa Hancock] has the ability to turn people into stones.

More recently; toys being alive, little fairy people, personified animals, these are like references from fairy tales stories.

That princess of alabastra... the desert environment, reminds me of 1001 nights (the Arabian tale).

Living inside a whale (Christian Bible reference...)

The name Zoro, I'm pretty sure the author was referencing Zorro, another fictional swordsman.

The love of objects (Usopp and his ship)... I think this is like a reference to something... but I can't put my finger on it. There was an anime I've seen where objects have feelings and they want to be loved by their owners etc.... If the owners love those objects they become happy or something :S I forgot the name of the anime.

If there's one thing I love about One Piece is its incredible references to other things... and the author's ability to mesh it together into one whole story.

The man who ate the goro goro no mi was Enel from Skypia. That's one of my favorite arcs, really shows you how powerful haki is.

Where the hell is Outbreak Company? They even read Attack on Titan multiple times in the anime!
