I love Toradora though it is formulaic. Golden Time is an absolutely wonderful romp, for the most part, in the first half but completely falls off the tracks once the story tries to handle Banri's memory issues head on. The final 2 episodes are solid and I'm actually glad it ended the way it did but the several episodes leading up to those last 2 were almost unwatchably bad. Both series have absolutely wonderful characters and all in all definitely worth watching. With that said, there are other romance animes that I would definitely recommend over those 2...like Ef

I made it to ep. 16 of Golden Time before I realized how incredibly slow and over-dramatized it was. I like rom coms and dramas, but GT just didn't click with me at all. I did enjoy Toradora, even if it was predictable, because I simply liked the pacing and characters more. Both are good and I can see why people enjoy both, Toradora is just more my thing.

I like them both. However, Toradora is my all time favorite series of its genre. It has some of the best characters, drama, and moments that were just amazing. Golden Time also had great characters, but some of the really weird stuff with the memory loss was a bit eyebrow raising at points. However, I didn't mind the overly dramatic parts. I am sadly a sap for that type of thing when it is done well, and Golden Time was done pretty well... Just not as well as Toradora. XD

Toradora - 9/10
Golden Time - 8/10

Golden Time for sure.

I loved its different setting and I liked the characters a lot more. Ryuuji was a better MC than Banri, but I still think Golden Time was better overall.

Toradora was awesome, but it was more typical. Golden Time on the other hand was pretty different and I loved how it focused on characters that were in an actual relationship.

The ending and all that didn't affect my view on the show at all. I know a lot of people thought it was stupid, and maybe it was, but I personally didn't give a flying fuck. I was happy with a happy ending. Ideally, they should have left the ghost stuff out and just focused on him being a normal amnesia guy with no ghost.

Anyways, Golden Time was more my type of anime and it really struck home with me since I started college last year.

I'd say both shows are equally good and it comes down to your preference. Toradora is about how two people end up in a relationship, while Golden Time is about the ups and downs of being in a relationship if that makes sense. Also, do want to watch high school students or college students.

I will say Golden Time is more realistic. In Toradora you've got the Tsundere, the Genki Girl, the Student Idol and all the character traits that go along with those archetypes (albeit played realistically). In GT the characters are a mix of different traits.

For me I prefer Golden Time, but mainly because I'm a college student and can more easily relate to the characters. I still love Toradora though. I preordered NIS's premium bluray the day it was announced.

Golden Time is carried by it's realism, but Toradora is carried by it's emotion.

The thing about Golden Time is that the story and characters were really good and had realistic relationship problems, which YOU NEVER SEE in anime. That carries the show, however it's held back by production values. I'm sure anyone watching Golden Time when it was airing noticed that it was NOT J.C. Staff at their best in the animation department, and I didn't think the VA's did that well either. So great content, but an average means of presenting it.

Toradora on the other hand is a bunch of tropes as characters, and even though they're done extremely well, the story is just a typical high school romance. That being said, the production values for Toradora were obviously much higher that Golden Time, because if you compare the animation style of Toradora to ANYTHING coming out right now, you will find that Toradora has the most expressive animation for...actually just about any anime. Because the animation is more dynamic and done much better than Golden Time, (and top that off with better VA's) more emotion is brought out for the viewer.

Because of this, I lean towards Toradora because it just has more emotion through animation and acting. This does not mean in any way that Golden Time was bad. It was one of the strongest shows of the recent seasons past (hell, I thought it was better than Attack on Titan), and I can't wait for a Sentai DVD release.

[Edit] Aaaand apparently it's licensed by NIS, not Sentai.

I think it is exactly this. The ghost stuff just felt WAYYYYYY out of place in the series. Every time it came up it just started to take me out of the series at times. However, the characters and story was so good, that I HAD to finish the series, and I am glad I did. I love the series, and if they did take out the whole random ghost silliness (and maybe shore up some other elements just a bit) and the series could have easily have been better than Toradora.

Toradora for me was just perfect, despite the tropes. It captured people in a pretty damn good way, and the chemistry from the cast is dead on perfect. I like Ryuji more than Banri, and I like Taiga a bit more than Kouko (both are freaking amazing in different ways.) I don't really know why, but Toradora is just one of those series I can watch at any time. Golden Time is a series I can watch multiple times, but need to be in more of the right mood to do so. I am very much looking forward to the release on DVD. I want Golden Time for my collection. It would look nice next to my copy of Toradora. XD

I'm glad we pretty agree. And I like Koko a bit more than Taiga. I would say that Toradora is probably top 3 high school romances ever, if not number 1.

The ghost stuff in Golden Time was just too much, just keep it realistic and no supernatural nonsense.

And I don't rewatch series too much, but Golden Time and Toradora are about equal for me in terms of rewatching.

Btw, has the author of Golden Time/Toradora written any new series recently? I'm just wondering what will be the next series animated.

I love Toradora. I just bought the blu-rays and have watched it twice since then. It's in my top 5 favorite anime! The ending was a bit puzzling in the anime and it was the only thing that was a detractor but it doesn't really take away much from the enjoyment. The ending in the light novel is better in my opinion, so i recommend checking it out.

I loved Golden Time too though. There aren't many anime that focus on college age people, so it was kind of refreshing to watch. I liked the romance as well and the ending was fairly fulfilling. I'll have to rewatch it again soon!

I'm halfway through Toradora, and i already like it a lot more than Golden Time, the depth of character feels a lot bigger and better, just the overall production seems much more well thought, not to mention the ending of Golden Time was .... eeeehhhh ... okay.

T0-RA-DO-RA!!! Definitely my pick.

Golden Time was a bit "all over the place" for me, but it was still pretty good. Just not as good as Toradora!
