Gundam Seed/Destiny

Space Runaway Ideon (1980).

It was epic for a series that turned out to have low ratings. The featured mecha was nearly as tall as a skyscraper and had the power to destroy planets with little to no effort. It was the first of its kind (showing a gritty side of sci-fi and having a very striking conclusion), and has earned its place in anime history as a classic. Ideon was Hideaki Anno's inspiration for making Evangelion.
