The only mecha anime I know is Zoids Genesis. And I enjoyed it.

I've seen the argument before that Neon Genesis Evangelion shouldn't be considered a mecha anime since the eva's were not actually machines.

I think most subscribe to the "If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck" philosophy, however.

I would say NGE if you count it as a mecha series

The best mecha actions has got to be the in these 4 gundam series so far. I've watched a lot of mecha series and they are good, but in my opinion, the action sequence in these 4 series is intense and touching. Oh and I watch anime not only for the storyline, but for the way the anime is drawn as well, that factor can affect your view on an anime when watching one- my opinion.
