A. Neon Genesis Evangelion technically isn't a mech anime as we find out later in the series.
B. There's nothing anti-christ in Evangelion and the religious references were just added for aesthetic.

Gundam may have set a standard for all mech anime, but to be honest its mostly cool fight scenes and politics. The plot really isn't that great although it is above average. Of all the Gundam plots, Gundam Seed isn't even close to being the best one so it shouldn't even qualify.

Full Metal Panic may be my favorite series of all time, but the plot isn't really mind blowing.

With all these factors put into play, I would have to place Tengen-toppa Gurren Lagann on my list at the top. Its a hard pick considering anime like Macross and Gunbuster exist. Its just that it managed to incorporate comedy and manly man wisdom into what became a rather deep anime and managed to do it pretty well.

I would have liked to mentioned Rahxephon, but EVA fanatics will just go at my throat.

I like the action part of eureka seven (sugoi graphics >,<) .....
but I prefer the story plot of code geass... :3

I hate Neon Genesis Evangelion, just one of those animes that could have been better. Don't know why people would like such an anime that is so confusing, and especially the WTF?! CRAP ENDING!!

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but I would have to personally say Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, is by far the best mecha anime.

1)Gundam "Gundam Seed > Gundam Wing > Gundam X > G Gundam"
(just my preference lol even though Gundam Wing is what got me hooked on Gundam series.)

2)Macross (Classic, though the singing got a bit repetitve ><)

3)Eureka 7
(Well I'm a sucker for the typical group of ppl in an adventure with romance involved ^^ oh ya and riding on air waves, pretty kool concept for a mech anime)

4)Zegapain (Love the storyline, similar to matrix but with a different type of twist...sad very sad like the name implies lol)

Well theres alot of more mentioned alrdy but those are the 4 that comes to my mind when you mention "mech" anime.
Oh ya... I guess they all have good theme music <3
