I'll note right away I'm not a huge mecha fan though I know of the series since lots of my friends are into them way more heavily from watching the Gundam series to playing the Super Robot Wars games.
I found the ones I like the most are a bit unique like Martian Successor Nadesico, Sakura Wars, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Idolmaster Xenoglossia and Rah Xephon.

You basically said it yourself. If you go back as far as Getter Robo series for the Super Robot genre, you'll find out it basically uses every single Super Robot formula ever created. Its a solid series, but defiantly not the BESZ MECHA SHOW EVAAA that most people put it out to be.

I guess I can see that considering since a lot of the really old mecha series were big on drills and combining robots but I think it at least still has style and a good story too it. But like I said its not my favorite and I wouldn't consider it the best either but I did enjoy it still.
