.hack invented this particular genre.

All SAO is doing is adding another entry to it.

Like oreimo invented the imouto genre?

I dont think so...isn't SAO originally a light novel? it would be weird for a light novel to be off of an anime.

Short answer yes, but if we were going to really examine it then no since if we went by that logic all anime would be a ripoff of everything. The plot is different enough that I do not believe it is a ripoff, especially if you've read the light novels like I have.

Its the whole Hunger Games is a rip off of Battle Royale and Battle Royale is a rip off of Lord of the Flies argument all over again. There is always going to be something that came before it.

Lord of the Flies - The Running Man - 1984 (???) - Battle Royale - Hunger Games

Only thing that is a rip off is Divergent from The Hunger Games. Ugh.

This again?

No.

SAO started as a short webseries at the same time that .hack aired. Both started in 2002. Nobody ripped off anyone.

Haven't watched .hack yet, so I have no opinion.

But think of it this way: Is Cardcaptor Sakura a ripoff of Sailor Moon?

Absolutely not, both of them are simply in the "Magical Girl" category of Anime/Manga.

I know of that other .hack the OP was talking about with Kite because I saw parts of the manga but that's the only other one I know. Didn't know about there being other series at all. Or at least I didn't care enough to keep track.

yea, I can't really recommend any of the other .hack// animes, with the exception of the OVAs that came with the 4 part .hack// games (outbreak, mutation, infection, quarantine). they're all pretty boring. I would recommend the games, however. especially .hack//G.U.

*Looks up GU*

Damn it, its on PS2???

I'm pretty sure I don't have a PS2 anymore

backwards compatible PS3?

.......rom?

Am I sick and tired of all these fucking threads comparing the two?

Hack was an entirely different concept. Might as well just called every shounen a copy of Dragonball.

NO story is original in its entirety.. most take ideas from older stories and make a new one, whether from the bible or a plethora of older famous stories.. Anime in general is ripe with these types of things primarily from japanese folklore.

SAO is a story about technology that uses gaming as a setting, Hack is a story of overpowered gamers and most of the anime hardly makes sense without playing the games. Ah and this thread and any like it is prolly a troll, because i have a hard time believing anyone stupid enough to actually think this.

Did I miss something? did .hack come before or after TRON

Tron was from 1982.

So 20 years before .hack and SAO.

Which is also why it is not set in an MMORPG which someone tried to use as an argument for it not counting as .hack or SAO to ripoff from, which is bs because MMO's didn't even exist until about the 90's anyway, not at least in the since that we see them as. BUT it was still stuck in a game genre, so it counts.

.hack stole from Jumanji, duh. Jumanji was the ultimate MMORPG with the largest game world, most number of "classes", and the largest player population of any MMO to date.
