This again?

No.

SAO started as a short webseries at the same time that .hack aired. Both started in 2002. Nobody ripped off anyone.

they started working on the anime since 2000 or 2001

I'm pretty sure that amateur writer 28 year old Reki Kawahara wasn't in on the .hack production meetings

SAO is not a rip-off of .hack//sign, but saying it isn't similar is just silly. Themes from all 4 major arcs of the SAO series can be found in .hack//sign.

I know ALO is generally considered by many to be crap but to only compare half the series is wrong. SAO only constitutes half of the first season of anime and if you include the second season, only 1/3rd. In the original novels SAO is only represented by a mere 3 of the 14 novels to date (15 if we just base it on the title of the upcoming 15th novel) and 2 novels are side-stories lmao.

In retrospect god damn was Sword Art Online so wasted because the first 4 chapters of the first novel set the tone for such an epic tale. Not seeing Tonkii animated in the anime also made me sad panda :(. Here's hoping the Progressive series reclaims whats left of the massively wasted potential the SAO world had to offer.

.hack invented this particular genre.

All SAO is doing is adding another entry to it.

(I cannot quote you which exact title might have started that "genre", but the imouto thing has at least been a hentai thing since ... the '80s, IIRC.)

I've only seen SIGN. Only one character was stuck in the game, and players didn't die when they were killed. :p Further, the stories are very different, for reasons kvi explained.

So no.

Not a ripoff no SAO does explore some similar ideas that .Hack did with players falling into a coma while playing a game and being trapped inside it but for the most part they are very different stories and worlds. SAO focuses more on action and the relationship between the two main characters with the enemies being for the most part corporate greed and crazy game makers. .Hack is more about a mystery of why one player is trapped in the game and it revolves mostly around that one character and the people bought together by that mystery. The game takes on a life of it's own instead of any real outside interferance by it's creators.

I think really if i was going to compare an anime more recent to .Hack i'd say Log Horizon has more in common with it than SAO which has gone in a massively different direction.

Both are set in massive virtual MMORG worlds.
Player Killings are present in both series
Races: Only in Sword Art Online's ALFheim world, there are multiple races just like .Hack's races.
Guilds: Both SAO and .Hack have concept due to being MMORGs. However, the guild system in .Hack is more complex and intricate.
both are trap in the MMORG worlds
Both Kirito and Kite have this mentality to help others in need of help.
Both Kirito and Kite are professional duel wielders. For Kite, some of his blades are invisible.

The similarities that you mentioned in your post are the only things that the two series have in common. No, they are extremely different.

I saw the first .hack//sign

I'm not gonna lie, I was bored. I did watch the entire thing.

But when I watched SAO I was entertained.

THIS! I actually bought .hack//sign before I watched it. Honestly, after a few episodes I got bored. I didn't really like it. However, I loved SAO EXCEPT the later half with the faeries was kind of lame in my opinion. I do have high hopes for this new season though, the first episode was great.
