I'm related to people like that...

One of my cousins looks at his pets as tools... He was trying to breed Golden Retrievers... the male that he bought to mate with the bitch was kind of bad tempered... (Most dogs I've run into that are that way are usually abused)... I never had any trouble with it but my cousin complained that the dog bit him... A few months later he talked about how he put the dog down... It was gruesome...

He always complained about his middle son in much the same way. If it wasn't for social mores and rule of law I am reasonably sure that my cousin would have put his middle son "down" the same way... I have a hard believing that this person has any conscience...

When you tell your son that you "HATE HIM," and not be kidding... or discovering that if you want to "put-down" a Golden you need something more than a .22....

I don't talk to the guy any more...
I used to think I had issues...

I guess it is developed in the brain while the body is developing itself. It's not like it's a spirit. We can take the brain out of something and put it into another body, It'd still have the same consciousness (though I am not sure if that is possible with our current level of technology). I am guessing at some point in our evolution self awareness must have thrived. I mean being scared to death does give a certain edge in the a survival aspect. Fearing for your life will push you past some limits. I guess consciousness is just part of brain power. Very very complicated brain power. The kind that we will not understand in a long time. The brain limits our consciousness. A dog see it's food in the bowl and knows where to go to eat it. It doesn't really comprehend where it came from our how it physically got there ( I mean literally it doesn't comprehend we go to a store and buy it). And going to another level humans don't comprehend what causes gravity and what dark matter/energy is or how the universe fully works. I'm making a stretch on the topic here but if there is life with higher intelligence than us ( much higher) their consciousness will be better than ours and comprehend higher thoughts, and possibly beings on higher levels than that. Beings with higher consciousness than us (by a lot I mean) would really be considered almost gods, and very much so gods to some people.

Just think, Try to think of nothingness. Try to think of what would be before the universe and before that. Keep trying to go back into the point where there isn't anything. Our minds can't really grasp that. I believe our consciousness is just not high enough. And back to the topic. I believe consciousness is linked to brains willpower to get better or to live. Allowing us to learn and do things not on pure instinct definitely has it's perks. Considering without consciousness we literally wouldn't be here.

I mean we wouldn't be typing on this computer or any league of possibility around. What I'd like to know is if we can physically alter a consciousness. I mean there is brain surgery right? We are getting to the point where we can use technology to aid our bodies, hearing aids, even making the blind see. So can we alter someones conscious by messing with the brain or very dna? I think that would be playing with forces we probably shouldn't. But still it could possible make a new human that is will learn and be better than any other human. I'm not a scientist and I don't have theories to back up my thoughts. I am just speaking weird ideas that people will believe I am crazy for.

Just as eyes serve as windows to your soul think of consciousness as the CT aka connective tissue to your soul. According to some theorists, academics it even persists beyond the ending of our mortal coil.

Do Plants Have Consciousness is a more interesting question. But we have brains and that just makes everything easier imo.

they could and in a sense the plant's design, which seems more specific, might have more insight to its purpose than we do and plants seem to follow a manual, claim territory, adapt etc... imo. might even be more conscious than humans.

More conscious than humans? What does that mean? We've yet to determine what consciousness is but we do have a criteria as to what constitutes consciousness. If something possesses sentience, self awareness and intentionality it can be called conscious, to name a few qualities.

Plants are definitely acutely aware of their environment: they have long term memory and can adapt and sense better than humans, but that's more to do with the differences in our biology. At best plants have a form of intelligence rather than consciousness, but just as we've moved forward from animal models of intelligence to then identifying them as conscious, maybe we'll do something similar with plants.

Then it's possible to prove consciousness and self-awareness in AI?

I would go as far as to say we could most likely be able to replicate self-awareness and consciousness in a program so yes. I also say its more than possible to create a self learning program for an AI as well. (would we do that.. Most people do not like the idea of a self-aware computer that can learn over time by learning from its experiences. (but I would love to build one and place that AI into a Android made to be a maid/butler. I love to have the help around the house, and to aid with the shopping.

Having the ability to process information and respond accordingly doesn't necessarily mean something is intelligent or conscious. It's far more complex than that.
