I think that the problem is not purely them worried about CR rips. I have a suspicion that at least a part of it may be down to those regional broadcast contracts. A Japanese station may not mind too much about being a few hours (or days) behind other Japanese broadcasts but they might possibly take issue with some shows being available legally in other countries before they have aired it?

It wouldn't surprise me too much at this point if some of the Japanese regional contracts had negotiated guarantees that no international stream could be allowed before their station had a chance to air it.

It also wouldn't surprise me too much if some of these delays were for reasons that the Japanese licensors didn't necessarily tell Crunchyroll.
The CR contract may say "Stream no sooner than two days after the initial Japanese broadcast" without any official reason being stated.

I just get this feeling that it may not always be the Japanese companies being unaware of fansubs and rips and blissfully losing international legal views to pirate streams and downloads. It might be a little bit of ensuring that as much of the Japanese audience as possible gets their chance to watch it legally before other countries have their official showing. Otherwise, they may feel like they are encouraging Japanese viewers to pirate shows if they want to stay ahead of secondary-market air dates.

All speculation, of course. But it wouldn't surprise me if this is at least one of several factors.

Its conceivable that someone involved has that in mind as a reason, but I have never seen any actual evidence that any licensor acts that way.

Online speculation that the licensors are doing things for that reason may be assuming that the question of what terms to offer overseas streaming rights looms larger than it really does.

And bear in mind that it wouldn't even have to explicitly state that its a limit on international streaming ... all it would have to state would be that "nobody other than" and list the Japanese distributors that get it first, and it would imply international streaming has to be somewhere behind that member of the broadcast pool in line.

If that was the case, the member of the broadcast pool wouldn't need any special reason to stand up for its rights ... maintaining its reputation as a company that stands up for its rights would be reason enough.

The two most likely reasons are that kind of pre-existing contract in the broadcaster pool before the license was ever opened up for international streaming, and logistical delays due to what stage in the process the material is actually made available to Crunchyroll.

The first one only gets fixed through a patient process of continuing to raise it in negotiations with licensors and hoping that licensors can amend the language for the next round of production committee agreements ... and even if that change got started, it would likely take several years before the change had become standard language for most production committee agreements ...

... the second one gets fixed through a patient process of continuing to raise it in negotiations with licensors and hoping that licensors can amend the language of the contracts hiring animation studios to get materials delivered at an earlier stage in the process ... and even if that change got started, it would likely take several years before the change had become standard language for most animation studio hiring agreements.

Its just part of normal Japanese business practices that these kinds of changes take time, because nobody wants to be the team member that is pushing for a change to an established consensus.

I guess it's dead. No episodes up since the first one and no news about it.

On Encouragement of climb, perhaps it has something to do with the scrolling text that runs twice per episode. It appears that it's an advertisement for new DVD/Blu ray releases. It makes me question how Crunchyroll gets the video for the show in the first place.

I don't understand why North America is excluded for Black Butler... It was available for us last time, why not this time?

What do you mean "last time"? CR has went legit half way through the original series, and certainly didn't have either it past that point, and never had the second series.

Funimation simulcast the second series and licensed the original series around the same time. They also are the ones that simulcast the current series along with Daisuki (although the latter is on a one week delay, although that is the same as Funimation's free viewing)

My memory may be off due too watching too much anime in these years, but I thought I had watched some of Kuroshitsuji on here.

As noted, CR went legit half way through the original series (it premiered in fall 2008), so you could well have seen that first half here. Just keep in mind that CR still did fansubs at that time, and Funimation didn't license the series until the second one premiered.

That must be the reason I remember watching it on here. I'm still sad I can't watch it on here anymore. Thanks for clarifying my memory

Yama no Susume 2nd Season or encouragement of the climb season 2, I hope this dose not become the new normal for CR.

Also with titles being released as dub only, scary times.

I agree, I hope this doesn't become the new normal. Although it seems normal now for them to make announcements about simulcasting a title only to have that never materialize.

Still no sign of yama no susume season 2 episode 2.

I wonder if I'm the only fan of this series who is still waiting on Crunchyroll for it...
