I had a hard time deciding.

Wow, what a Helluva Question.

3. Nagato.

Nagato rounds Out the top 3, as He just HAD to be among this List. Nagato, having been a Student under Jiraiya realized what Peace was early on, and was One of the first to actually set Out with a set of ideals in His Mind, much unlike those carried by literally the entire Shinobi World. He saw how War and Hatred, only bred and beget MORE War and Hatred. I won't speak of the Actions that were committed by His 'Hand', by proxy, concerning the 6 Paths given as a result of the Powers of the Rinnegan. He did indeed lose His way. Not that what He was actually wanting to do, in the End, was wrong...But the path He took; He had forgotten the ideals and knowledge He had as a Young Man. The One realizing that Death, in no way was able to solve problems, but rather continued the Pattern. So You may be wondering, why is a "Villain" among Your Top 3 Characters? Nagato had sunk as low as possible. He had erased Out of His Mind what it was When He is confronted by the Young Naruto Uzumaki, and they share the depths of their Stories with One another...Out of the mouth of the Young Ninja who stands before Him comes the Words that He, Himself believed in as a statute, yet in His Own words was too weak to make a Reality.

"Peace...I don't know how to get there…but…someday I'll break the curse. If there's such a thing as peace, I will find it!"

Hearing this from Someone whom was a follower of the same Master, in the same way and desire in which He, Himself once had causes an absolute 180° in the heart and mind of the fallen Shinobi. He questions Naruto whether or whether not He knows of the Pain that will be coming after Him from this instance until the End; whichever type of End it may be...He see's the determination upon the Young Jinchuriki's face, and within His Heart. Naruto makes known He has already gone through Pain, and loss...and no matter what type of Path lays in front of Him, no matter what He will continue forward. Nagato was a killer. Through the Use of the Rinnegan, He attempted to lay waste to Konohagakure and Use the Tailed Beasts as weapons of War. He had, through the loss of His Friend and the loss of His mobility, begun to allow hate to fester. He had become that exact Person, as a Young Shinobi, He fought to change the Minds of. Though, through what can only be described as a Miracle...the Person who had come to exact the ultimate revenge against Him, is in the End, the One who "saves Him" from Himself. Deeply remorseful, ashamed, and determined by the Words spoken to Him by Naruto, Nagato in the very last moments of His Life chooses to let go of the idea of Revenge. He remembered what it was to be a Freedom fighter. That the words which Jiraiya had spoken to Him were, indeed the truth. Seeing the Young fellow Student, an absolute emulation of Himself at that age...however, One who followed the exact OPPOSITE path in which He did...One that believed in finding absolute Peace, no matter the cost...Having been privy to seeing the intent of this Student, Nagato in a way was Reborn. With the last bit of His Chakra, He sacrifices His own Life and Uses the Rinne Rebirth, returning the Life energies of all of those He had killed in His stand against Konoha. Stating that He now intends to take the Path that He had once given up On, yet He can see alive and well in the Boy. He dies with a Smile on His face. Nagato is among this list because deep down, HE WANTED to be redeemed. Yet, until this meeting with the Young Ninja, He had no way to go about doing so. Naruto healed and ultimately saved Nagato's Life from being remembered as that of destruction, Death, and revenge...But of Peace.

"You are an odd kid…You remind me of myself when I was young…I couldn't believe in what Jiraiya believed in…nor believe in myself. But you chose a different path. In you I can see another future. I think I shall believe in you…Uzumaki Naruto. Dying like trash; never ending hatred…pain that never heals…that is warNarutothisis what you must face…The book…and you…It's like…someone…set this all up…Or…maybe…this…is…the hand of the real God…My role is over now…Naruto..."

2. Spike Spiegel

Spike is a Bounty Hunting, badass Extraordinaire. He is also the reason why I list My location as Mars, just for the Heck of giving Out knowledge. Cowboy Bebop was One of the very first Anime that I ever had the absolute privilege to watch, and MAN, did it leave an impression on Me, ever! In a World of "Men's Men", Spike is at the top of His Game. A distinguished fighter in Martial arts, and with His trusty Jericho 941, He's an ever better marksman. Spike used to Work for an Organization of pure evil, known throughout the Galaxy as the "Red Dragon Syndicate" alongside His partner, and right hand Man, Vicious. However, as things tend to play Out, when You are Working in such a dangerous "Workplace conditions", Gunmen from a rival Syndicate set Out upon attempting to kill the Head. Shot; wounded but still alive, He miraculously stumbles His way throughout the Slums to the Home of a Lady named Julia...which just happens to be the Girlfriend of Spike's "friend", and second in command, Vicious. Whether or not He knew of Julia's relationship with Vicious, I don't recall it ever delving into...and consequentially, is something that I still wonder about from time to time even Today. Nursed back to health, Spike amazingly makes it through, and is by this time haven fallen in love with Julia, and the feelings from Julia seem to be reciprocal. Together, they make plans to leave the Syndicate life completely behind, and go on the run...far away from the Syndicates reach. Well naturally, upon hearing of this, and Vicious learns of the betrayal, both to the Syndicate, and amongst Julia's infidelity, He is furious and as You can imagine eager the even the Score. But, being the ridiculously clever Man that He is, Spike manages to STAGE HIS DEATH, and have One who's Word Vicious would believe, confirm that He in fact WAS killed. This satisfies Vicious enough so that the Syndicate is able to all but forget about Spiegel, believing Him to 100% be deceased. This allows Him to escape for good onto a Ship known as the Bebop which is Piloted and Owned by a Man named Jet Black; an ex-Cop, turned Bounty Hunter. The Men become good Friends and before You know it, Teamwork is developed between the two. A total of 3 Years goes by, before they eventually collect several Other Traveling companions.

I was younger then, I wasn’t afraid of anything, I didn’t think about dying for a second. I thought I was invincible. Then I met some girl. I wanted to live, I started to think like that; for the first time I was afraid of death. I had never felt like that before.

Soon enough, the Syndicate realizes that Spike is not as dead as He may have sounded via those Informants who were intentionally looking Out for Spike. In Several more instances throughout the Story, Spike and Vicious actually face off; Either of them never able to land a killing blow upon the Other. Another time while meeting coincidentally throughout this shady Drug deal gone bad, Spike is almost able to execute Vicious yet again, both of them escape with no further result. I don't want to SPOIL things for Anyone, but...hey I WARNED YAH! Eventually the two, Spike and Julia reunite towards the End, and once again reassert their Love and feelings toward One another, and that they wish to leave the Life, the Syndicate, and everything else behind and simply run away with One another. This doesn't go as planned, as Vicious mercilessly finally guns down Julia. Spike is able to escape back to the safety of the Bebop, and undergoes an Existential crisis. He has One last Meal with His Friend Jet, and the other passenger, and with revenge on His Mind, He becomes a One Man Army, Hellbent on penetrating straight into, and through the actual Building, housing the "Red Dragon Syndicate". With nothing left to live for, and a thirst for absolute Revenge, He plows straight into and through the super Guarded, highly well protected Syndicate establishment, making an absolute embarrassment of the Security. He is not to be stopped. He knows that His rival, Vicious lies at the top of the Building, so He fights like a well oiled, One Man Killing Machine straight through to the top. Finally the two Rivals are standing but feet apart; there is NO escaping for either of them this time. Neither Man hesitates. After a brief scuffle, in which Spike is hit by a thrown knife-like projectile very close to the Heart while running into the fray...Vicious who's weapon of choice has always been a Katana is literally blade to gun with Spike...like when two Sword fighters collide weapons; think of the same happening, only Spike is carrying His trusty 441. Amazing, I know. Vicious is able to push Spike backwards, slicing at the arteries in His hip. Quickly, a shot is fired into Vicious upper Body around the left shoulder area and then both Men's weapons go flying...The Gun of Spike's bounces toward Vicious, Vicious' Katana slides toward Spike.

Spike: Julia is dead! Let's finish it now!

Vicious: As You wish!

The Men slide the weapons back toward One another, and before Vicious is even able to reach His Sword, Spike reaches His Gun and fires...The killing shot, finally. Vicious drops. Our last scene is iconic, and still up for speculation even to this Day. Spike, is seen holding His wounds from being cut many times and stabbed...walking down the steps, and into History. He laughs it seems for a split second, and makes the shape of a Gun with His fingers...

"Bang."

1. Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy is special. He is but a Young Boy, with a fantastic Dream. A Dream that is at the forefront of every motive, action, and dialogue spoken by Him. He wants to be "King of the Pirates" by discovering the Treasure that is legendary as it is completely unknown regarding its contents, spoils, or literally ANYTHING else concerning it! One Piece is One of the longest and ongoing Anime, and also One of the most popular having set Records many times throughout it's History in not only Japan, but abroad in the Western, English speaking Countries. The central idea in One Piece is the idea that Friendship; Nakama, will help You through it. As the Show begins, You get to see the first couple members that Luffy is successfully able to convince to sail Out to Sea with Him. Treating Life, and each and every Day as a constant adventure, the Anime shifts from moments of pure Comedic gold, to Oscar winning...at least in My opinion...Worthy drama as He comes upon new Friends; each of them in a different Living situation than the Other. When the gang reaches an area called Arlong Park, in My opinion, that is where One Piece, as a Show, and Luffy as a Protagonist finally become something that is worth the ridiculous amount of Episodes the particular Anime is known for and firmly establishes Luffy as a character who, while interested in Personal gain only to the extent of becoming respected enough to deserve said Title, "Pirate King"...above ALL ELSE, He takes His Friends pain and personal issues very serious. This comes to a Head at Arlong Park, where He is finally asked for help by His future Navigator to escape Her slavery. Lets just say, Luffy responds. He brings the entire places down, in His anger - all to save the Life and the Future of someone He had just met, and wonderfully goes on to add another Friend, Comrade, and in Her case, genius Navigator to His Ship.

"NAMI!!!! OMAE WA...ORE NO NAKAMA DA!!!!!!"

"I have Nakama who're not strong...But I still want them to be with me! So I have to be stronger than anybody else...Or I'll lose them all!"

What makes Luffy #1 at the top of My list of Characters? His love for those around Him to get better. He is an "All for One, and One for All" type of Individual, and that is what makes Luffy strong. It's not the Use of the Devil Fruit, it's the strength of His heart, and the love of His Crew. These are the types of things that made Me choose to put Luffy at the top of the List. I'll just say, this was a bitterly tough Question to answer, and especially to answer thoroughly. But I hope I made a little bit of sense, and maybe...just maybe, Someone out there may even agree with a little something or other regarding My choices.

3. Kengo Miyazawa - Little Buster (spoilers below)

2. "Watashi" - Humanity Has Declined

The protagonist of Humanity Has Declined is characterized perfectly for the series she appears in. "Watashi" is a testament to the attitude that led to humanity's decline. She always takes the easiest route to solve her problems, is interested first and foremost in covering for herself, and is just generally disinterested in doing any more than the bare minimum she needs to for society to accept her. She's also a genuinely good person, and very easy to like. "Watashi" seems like she's full of contradictions when one examines her closely, but she's actually a very easy character to understand: she represents humanity, and humanity doesn't usually make sense. She's inherently selfish, but in being selfish, helps the people and fairies around her. Her character is an exploration of the basic selfishness that underlies all human activity, and rather than condemning that quality, Humanity Has Declined embraces and celebrates it. She deserves the name she's so commonly referred to by: she's the single most relatable protagonist that I've encountered in any piece of fiction.

1. Elmer C. Albatross - Baccano!

Elmer's a strange presence in Baccano! He doesn't seem to have much of anything to do with the actual plot of the series; he's an advisor at times, but mostly, he's just an onlooker. He mainly just shows up to have lighthearted chats with other characters, and to toss out idealism when bad things happen. Elmer wants people to smile. All the time. Regardless of what's happened to them. And looking into his past, he lives by that tenet himself. Elmer is devoted to spreading happiness wherever he goes, so much so that he doesn't need any reason to be happy. His happiness comes from the ability to distance himself from what happens around him so as not to be affected by it: fundamentally, he's extremely apathetic. But through this almost absolute apathy, Elmer is successful in brightening the lives of those around him, offering people respite from their despair, and inspiring others to do what's right. He's an annoyance to some, and extremely creepy to others, but he's nobody's enemy, and has in fact befriended people that nobody else has managed to. Elmer has one of the most (ostensibly) amoral and inhuman outlooks that I've seen, but he does nothing but help people. He's the character that best sums up the thematic content of Baccano!: "You're alive; isn't that pretty awesome?"

Basically, I really enjoy characters who take a concept or trait that's generally looked down on or demonized, and turn it into something resoundingly positive. Kengo shows us how immaturity can motivate someone to act in a decidely mature manner, and that it's the simple, most childish forms of affection that are the most pure. "Watashi" showcases the inherent selfishness of people, and explores how that selfishness so often becomes a benevolent force in our lives. Elmer separates apathy from the cynicism it's so commonly associated with, and turns it into a source of positive change, inspiration, and ultimately, happiness.

All tied for 1st place:

1. Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass
Two words: Zero Requiem. That is all.

2. Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop
Don't get me wrong, I love Spike too, but Faye's character stood out to me so much that I had to list her here. She's amazing, and one of the few female anime characters that I truly respect. I mean, she can hold her own against the male lead! That hardly ever happens in any media!

3. Yugo Hachiken from Silver Spoon
He's one of the most relatable and likable characters that I've ever come across. His presence in the anime made every so much more lighthearted, fun, and meaningful. I loved seeing him change and mature over time; something that I would've considered boring if he was any other character. Also, it doesn't hurt that he's practically my anime twin, but I have much more flaws than him.
