Just watch it and see for yourself.

It's really a love or hate thing with Evangelion.

Only if you're willing to watch it more than once to have a full understanding. That doesn't mean you will be totally lost, but a lot of things are very subtle.

My suggestion: Watch the original series first. It's superior to all else precisely because unlike the Rebuild films, it is more than some stereotypical action mecha anime. It focuses a lot more on character development. Also, be prepared to have some literary grasp of Biblical literature, psychoanalysis, and philosophy. If you don't have that, it's okay. You can pick it up along the way like I did.

After watching the series, you might be really stumped by the ending. In a nutshell the ending really was supplemental. It shouldn't be ignored, but you should also definitely watch End of Evangelion movie. It covers basically the same bases as the original ending, but from a much more budget friendly and action packed aspect. In other words, the movie and the original series ending are both indispensable.

Now for the Rebuilds.

The Rebuilds aren't finished yet, so it's difficult to fully judge them, but I will make a judgment anyways. As a pretty hardcore Evangelion fan (I consider it the greatest anime series of all time), they have left me disappointed. Many of the characters' personalities are completely changed or gutted. Rei is completely different. Misato's character is a shell of its former self. Shinji has become more of the typical action hero. The list goes on. Now there are some theories out there that possibly explain these huge changes. Some have suggested, and quite reasonably, that the Rebuilds are a continuation of the the original series, and not a remake in and of itself due to these character changes. In otherwords, the Rebuilds are a sort of time loop with slight changes. If this really is the case, then I must protest and claim that it's simply bad writing.

I'll cut myself short, since I could go on for a long time as to how I think you should stick with just the original series and the End of Evangelion movie.

I'll try to be impartial at the end here. In short, if you're looking for a more steamlined, typical action driven sci-fi mecha anime, then you should probably just watch the Rebuilds first. But if you're looking for what ACTUALLY made NGE a big name to begin with, then watch the original series along with the End of Evangelion movie.

P.S. Don't watch the dubs.

^ Ditto.

I will say though that even when they were rehashing 99% of the same content, the Rebuild films are a very different story in terms of the characters and themes. They are not a replacement for watching the original series and EoE.

As others pointed out, it really is just a love or hate thing with Eva. I personally am on the side of hate.

He should watch what he feels like.

Both the original Japanese cast and English dub do fine performances (obv, some more than others). Especially the ones voicing the main characters. This is true for the original Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Rebuild of Evangelion.

Rebuild even more so.

You act like I'm commanding him not to watch the dubs. It's more of an imploration/recommendation. He asked for my opinion, so I gave him my opinion: Don't watch the dubs. By all means, he can watch them if he wants to. That's the nature of an advice thread, is it not?

Very few of the voice actors in the dub are okay. Most tend to be bad. Indeed, the Rebuild dub is an improvement over the original series' dub. But to say they do fine performances? Sorry, you have bad taste in dubs.

It's best to let people evaluate dubs for themselves, imo. I have yet to hear one I didn't think was bad, but people who listen to them regularly don't seem to have a problem. And even the objectively bad ones can be amusing.

The original series is a trip to watch if you tend to watch a lot of current anime. It makes more use of film techniques and is truly a surreal mind trip at certain points.

Just don't go in thinking "OMG THIS GOING TO BE THE BEST ANIME EVER CREATED!!". It's a great series and some people don't agree with that but you can only really tell for yourself after watching it.
