After you watch the series, this can clear some things up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho07Ag6lV9g

By the way, the video doesn't get to episode 1 until 3:40
The first half is the premise.

You punks who don't watch it in dub, only to rewatch a scene in Sub, then go back to dubs a while later, and then sub again at other scenes....such shame.

Oh man, the eternal question for EVA -- "should I watch it?" And if you do watch it, shortly followed by "what the fuck did I just watch and why do I have a headache?"

The answer is a definite maybe.

You act like I'm commanding him not to watch the dubs. It's more of an imploration/recommendation. He asked for my opinion, so I gave him my opinion: Don't watch the dubs. By all means, he can watch them if he wants to. That's the nature of an advice thread, is it not?

Very few of the voice actors in the dub are okay. Most tend to be bad. Indeed, the Rebuild dub is an improvement over the original series' dub. But to say they do fine performances? Sorry, you have bad taste in dubs.

Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYjn8NpXJcs

Whats wrong with it?

You've got to be kidding me. Even for their time, they are bad.

In the 90's the dubs of Gundam Wing and Sailor Moon were regarded as well done.

Gundam Wing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVcCB4fze94

Sailor Moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUINRdGacZI&index=79&list=PL8F4DA363FFD55CEB

Today, those dubs wouldn't be highly praised if it were for a more recent anime. They would be laughed at, and I've witnessed it when trying to get friends to watch the old dubs. Even in those, there are pauses and sighs that seem unnatural.

Now compare that with the NGE example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYjn8NpXJcs

I'll just focus on Kaworu's voice for now. It's completely unnatural. No one that I have spoken with ever speaks with those pauses unless they are reading from a book and have trouble reading. When I translate Latin, and read the sentence in English aloud as I am translating, I talk just as fluidly as that. It's pretty obvious the voice actor was bad. It really takes the viewer out of the experience since the pauses in speech break the immersion, although as the dialogue continues it gets slightly better. My old roommate from Nepal spoke better and more fluidly than that. And English was not his first, second, third, but fourth language.

Compare all of these with something more recent, such as Ergo Proxy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjTPHVz6OOg

The difference is like night and day.

Sorry I couldn't find better examples. Most of the videos I could find were entire episodes on youtube, and I didn't want to link those here.

Why would someone switch back and forth? I originally watched the series in dub. I then watched in sub and have never looked back.

Watch it if you want I guess. I wouldn't if I were you though.

It's a pretty average watch for the 3/4ths of the series, not bad but nothing that blew my mind either. The end killed it for me though. They made it "deeply philosophical" to mask the fact that they ran out of money to make any more animations. It's a line of total BS that smug fans to this day still lap up and claim "if you don't like it you just don't get it." Maybe I would have bought it if Gainax didn't have those same budget problems with other series- a particularly egregious example being a romantic comedy named Kare Kano.

Was the first anime I watched, not sure whether it's the best start haha

Watch it and see. Some people (like me) love it, others not so much. I just really enjoyed the whole thing for some reason, but I imagine part of that is from the special place it has as my first one

Go watch it, see how you like it

One of the most pretentious anime ever made. It is for euphorics to tip their fedoras to while avoiding getting jobs to fulfill needs of independence and responsibility.

I just recently watched it and I thought it was pretty good. Even though It's not a series that I was able to blast through, it took atleast a week and half (a somewhat long time for me) though I got distracted by a reqtch of another show I had recently got the blu-rays for.

For language I would say Sub, I tried it in dub about a year ago and dropped it 3 episodes in because I couldn't stand Shiji's voice.
I also think that your enjoyment will hinge heavily on how much you find Shinji annoying, I found his actions understandable given his character and it was only in EoE that I found him annoying in the first half.

As for the last two episodes I think they are perfectly skippable, I watched part of them but they are nonsense and the End of Evangelion is far better conclusion to the series. Also skip Death & Rebirth it's better to assume it doens't exist for anyone that isn't a hardcore fan.

Ultimately though should you watch it? I would say yes but not because it is incredibly good (IMO iit is good), but it is incredibly important and influential even to this day. Also since is very controversial it allows for quite a bit of debate even if you don't like it.

So yea I think you should watch it atleast eventually.

I can't comment on the rebuilds since I haven't seen them yet, except I do feel like you would lose out watching them first since they are so much shorter and probably don't contain as much character development.

Also GRarkada did a fairly lengthy review I think would help you decide if you want to watch it

Try it out. The first half-ish of the series is actually pretty standard episodic type mecha stuff, and then it all goes downhill from there, ending up in a giant heap in the End of Evangelion. I really enjoyed the series but I know that a lot of people really hate it.

If you're watching it, watch it Series, then EOE. (You can also do TV 1-24, EoE, and then 25-26. Works both ways) Death and Rebirth is recap so it can be skipped. If you want to watch the rebuild movies, i'd suggest watching them after the series and EOE.

NGE is important to me subjectively and to anime in general. You should definitely check it out.

At this point, the show is about 20 years old, so some of the luster has gone from it...but I still would say you should watch it, if only for its significance in terms of anime history. Personally, it is still one of my favorite shows, but I was also 16-17 when the fan subs for the show started coming out, so I definitely was in the prime demographic for the series at the time. The character designs are still strong, even when the animation isn't. The story is definitely love-it-or-hate-it, and the more groundbreaking elements of the story have been copied so many times in the years following its release that it certainly won't be as impactful as it was back then, but, again, from a historical standpoint, it is pretty important.

And it has one of the best OP themes ever.

The Rebuild movies are good enough on their own, but certainly can't match the expectations of many fans, so they are, perhaps unsurprisingly, not regarded in the same way as the originals. The animation is quite good though, and I am interested to see how they'll end it.

I'd at least try out watching the original series though; you'll probably know by episode 8 or so if you're going to like it.
