Let's get this out of the way. Short answer, 'yes, and a big one at that'. Long answer:

An Otaku is someone with a hobby which involves them being confined to their house almost at all times much to their social detriment, due to a rejection of the outside world or other people. This can range from liking anime to surfing the internet or playing games. They constantly want to escape reality.

A weeaboo is someone who is infatuated with the culture of Japan. They believe it's the best thing since sliced bread, that it's without fault, and no other country nor people could top it's glaring magnificence. This often results in stuff like their obsession leading them to wish they themselves were Japanese, frequently using Japanese words in their speech, etc. Japanese Wannabe wouldn't be far wrong.

So, one is locking yourself in the house and becoming unhealthily addicted to a hobby, the other is an obsession with the culture of Japan so no they are not the same. Unfortunately the west butchered their meanings and gave them completely different definitions.

Both are hurtful, both are negative, both are different things, and neither should be used lightly, nor bragged about (it's like bragging about insomnia and saying 'I can stay awake way longer than all of you hue hue *pushes glasses up with middle finger*'. I mean, what sane person does that!?).

Liking anime doesn't make you an otaku, nor does it make you a weeaboo; an infatuation with Japan, or a hobby you dedicate yourself to so much your social life disappears makes you one of the two respectively. So for gods sake whatever you do don't be an idiot and brag about being one of the two.

i dont think it really matters... i just say i am a major anime fan, not my problem how people interpret it, or buisness. Although i do feel "weebo" is a derogatory name for people who like anime or people who want to learn the japanese language that aren't japanese.

Cringe

It's as bad as watching watamote

According to both those videos I am not an "otaku" or a "weeaboo"

But The difference has always been the fact that weeaboo is exclusive to anime, while otaku can be for anything such as, travel otaku or idol otaku

Weaboo actually doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do anything with anime. Its not an obsession over a specific hobby, its an obsession over a false and usually idealic representation of the Japanese culture as a whole, coupled with a delusion of correctness with those false beliefs. Anime is just one of the most common lenses that people get that false idea of what japan is like. It could also stem from someone who watched Karate Kid to much when they were young.

Hi guys i'm Japanese.

A otaku is not necessarily a NEET who stays in their room all day, or someone who lacks social skills.

A otaku can simply mean someone with a hobby. For example, someone who really loves photography, is a "Camera Otaku".

Yes, there are certain people who think that being any kind of otaku is uncool, but I would actually say that these people are in the minority because they are too stupid to realize that their lives are incredibly pointless and boring.

As for a weebo, well obviously the difference is that I can't be a Weebo because i'm not white.

for instance. It is believed that otaku people lack social skills, so can't actually go out into the world and hang out with people because they don't have the skills to do so. This is why they indulge themselves in games or anime.

Oops this sums up my life perfectly.

It sums up a lot of people, don't worry :)

I'd say Otaku is more like how we describe nerds.

NEET is self explanatory:

Not seeking
Education
Employment or
Training

And Weeaboo is basically a person pretending to be Japanese when they are not:

They do things like speaking broken English by putting Japanese words into a conversation regardless of if the other person knows what those words means and are over enthusiastic about what they think is Japanese culture but may in fact just be stereotypes gleamed from anime or the internet. An example of what a Weeaboo is like would be this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhHL96P_K4Y however, I'm fairly sure that video was from someone trolling.

yes there is

An otaku doesn't necessary mean an anime fan. it means someone who is extremely dedicated to their hobby.

An anime otaku, is someone who appreciates the Japanese culture and anime entertainment industry, but does not bash on other countries cultures and entertainment. There can be hardcore otaku, who collect every single thing related to their favorite shows, or their can be non hardcore otaku, who simply love to watch anime.

A weeaboo on the other hand is someone from a different nationality that pretends to be japanese and uses words like "kawaii" out of context and mispronounces them because they are ignorant. Most weeaboo often bash on their own culture and say everything that isn't Japanese is lesser. They often try to wear japanese cultural wear, without knowing the significance of it, and they pretend to know everything about the Japanese culture just because they watch anime (which really isn't a good judgement or representation of Japanese culture)

Weeaboo's often tend to disrespect other people and their opinions, often opting to insult them for their favorite anime choices. A weeaboo often makes a fool of themselves by constantly trying to act "moe" in real life or in a mans case, pretend to act like a samurai who follows the "bushido" code (when in reality they are simply pretending they are a hard ass filled with honor who will commit seppuku at the drop of a hat, when they actually have no idea what real bushido is).

Sorry if this offends anyone, but deal with it. Otaku's are not weeaboo's. In my honest opinion a weeaboo is the cancer of the anime watching community.

I wouldn't define "a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills" cool, but it's your opinion O.O

You are practically explaining me. I'm usually just in my room 24/7 so you're hurting my feelings.
