I wouldn't define "a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills" cool, but it's your opinion O.O

You are practically explaining me. I'm usually just in my room 24/7 so you're hurting my feelings.

Ahh~

Sorry ㅠ.ㅠ

I was just kidding, haha. I have a life, went to a party last night. But I know plenty of people who are cooped up in their rooms and they seem fine.

These days, it's an element of younger people like this who go on to be the 'doers' in life.

Yes there is a huge difference. Just look up Urban Dictionary.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=otaku

Otaku is the honorific word of Taku (home).

Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc)

Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer).

In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru". If you think about it, it's not really good to be called a guru if it means you are a total loser who can't socialize with other people except through the Internet.

Other Japanese words which have been confused by Westerners also include but not limited to: Anime, Manga, etc
otaku no jinsei ha yabai na! (it sucks to live the life of an otaku!)

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Weeaboo

Someone who is obsessed with Japan/Japanese Culture/Anime, etc. and attempts to act as if they were Japanese, even though they're far from it. They use Japanese words but usually end up pronouncing them wrong and sounding like total assholes. You can find alot of these faggots clogging up the forums of Gaia Online, hanging out in the international aisle of the supermarket, or crowding the manga section of your local bookstore. Synonym of wapanese.
I told that weeaboo girl over there that Inuyasha sucks. She slapped me across the face and proceded to cuss me out in Japanese.

Interesting, I know it as "Not in Education, Employment or Training". Very different meanings there.

I don't think "Otaku" or "Weeaboo" are particularly useful words.

"Otaku" seems to vary depending on who is using it and really needs to be defined each time (at least by context, if not expressly). Sometimes it can simply mean fan, other times it describes people with an unhealthy obsession and I'm not sure if there's an absolute official definition (language is flexible anyway, even if we sometimes wish it would be a bit less so). It can also be used as an insult but I don't see it as very useful for that (calling someone a fan of something isn't likely to hurt them much when it's true and insulting someone for having problems makes you look bad).

"Weeaboo" mostly seems to be used as an insult but it doesn't seem to be a good one either. I think people are entitled to their own culture even if it's made up of reinterpreting/misinterpreting another culture so insulting people for that doesn't seem worthwhile. As for people that are pushy about their own idea of the best culture, that's just a kind of elitism or general stupidity so I don't think it needs a specific word (especially since "Weeaboo" seems to cover a variety of made up cultural interpretations and is imprecise anyway).

I think anyone who refers to themselves as Otaku or Weaboo, especially interchangeably, look and sound extremely stupid.

I know this girl in real life who has been watching anime for less than a month, mainly SAO and K-On!. She went ahead and bought a sailor costume and wore it out in public several times, just randomly, around our local China Town. She posts statuses and pictures on Facebook about how she's such an Otaku and uses "Kawaii" 24/7. That, my friend, is a Weaboo.

My understanding of the term "weeaboo" is that it refers to a person who unthinkingly advocates for anything as long as it's Japanese, and who dons a persona fitting their image of what Japan is like without any regard to whether they're being culturally accurate or not. Meanwhile, an "otaku" is either someone with a hobby which has consumed them and significantly damaged their social life (Japan) or someone who passionately enjoys anime/manga (US/Western Europe).

Assuming I have my definitions correct these are distinct (but possibly related) concepts. A weeaboo is in all likelihood also an otaku, but an otaku is not necessarily a weeaboo.

I think you pretty much got it there. And as you noted, the definitions are different depending on which country you are in.

Otaku are nerds, and in Japan a lot of otaku are looked down upon often with a lot of disgust. I don't know when the appeal for being a nerd or otaku came from, it's not a positive personality trait.

As for Weaboo, isn't that just a Japan obsessed person? Somebody who curses the roundness of their eyes, or the fact they weren't born in Japan, stemming from not only anime culture, but Japanese movie, music, gaming, historical culture too. Ironically any non-Japanese person who refers to themselves as 'otaku' are automatically a weaboo also since you're basically using a foreign word to describe yourself as something your language already has a word for. I can speak a great deal of Japanese but I don't use random words or phrases out of context or pointlessly in the middle of English sentences.

I admit I'm a nerd. There's no two ways about it, I just am. But it's not really something to embrace, it's something that goes along with the things that I enjoy, the things that most people in the 'normal' world are completely oblivious to. I try not to let it affect my social life, but I do have the occasional awkward conversation at work about some foreign movie, or PC game nobody has heard of. I'm definitely a music nerd too, and in the way I dress, I'm an outcast to society in that respect too.

My peers at school who are not Japanese but keep acting like they are would be considered weeaboos. They rely on only anime to learn the language, Google for the culture, and me for the rest... Not that I care. I don't feel that calling these girls and guys weeaboos is the right thing to do anyway.

And otaku can be used to describe anyone with an outstanding obsession over any certain type of interest. You just see anime otaku bearing most of the brunt in media.

If you're comparing the two (anime otaku v. weeaboos), then there really isn't much of a difference. However, most Japanese people would be glad that you love the culture, but basing that affection solely through anime and manga is only a good place to start, not end.
