well i think it mostly stem (for my age anyways) from the early days of the internet, when u were afraid of giving away personal info to 'everyone'.
truth be told, its not that hard to link an avatar name to the real deal. youtube nemoskull and you can see what i look like. watch the vids and im pretty sure you can get a general idea of where i live. cyberstalk me long enough and you find out im jimmy *#^#$.

i gues what im trying to get across, is these days, nemoskull gives away as much (or more) info as does jimmy.
i use nemoskull more to lie to myself and feel safe, even tho im not.

oh and funny story. my origonal avatar was dacaptainnemo from a jules verne book. but back in the late 90's my cousin was obsessed with this thing called 'japanimation' and was current waist deep in to guyverskull. he made me a hotmail account (back when you had to explane that hot mail had nothing to do with porn and put nemo and skull together. i find it fitting that im now such a fan of anime.

To hide their identity.
Or some people just want to show creativity.
I made this account when I was like 12 so the username is stupid.

I usually use my main OCs name, SharxHanai or Sharxy.
Or I just use my nickname Ria for most things nowadays.

Because Judgementwolf sounds cool. Besides if anyone wanted to know my name they could ask. Although it'd be a bit confusing because I have two first names as a whole.

my real name is Cailyn but i go by Lyn.. i find screen names to be less boring and kind of fun. which is funny for me to say because my username is just 5 randomly typed letters

It just doesn't feel safe, and it's pretty much this personal rule I follow to protect myself online.

I for one think people use screen-names to have multiple personas to use whenever they feel like. But I for one like my name so much it's a part of my username.

Depends on the situation. Back in the days of BBS and Usenet, we'd post almost everything: full names, addresses and phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. Some of us used to post ICBM coordinates, but that was in the Cold War days when it was "fun" to do such like that. For online services like Q-Link, we'd use pseudonyms (screen names).

Cause my name (Jose) is the most common name in Hispanic and Latino history. Though now I wish I could change my Crunchyroll name, I was seriously lacking creativity that day

Do you really need a reason? Why not use a screen name?

On sites that don't allow two people to have the same username people will definitely run into issues if they only want to use their real name, unless they use their last name. Even then, they'll probably still be duplicates... although, you could add numbers. Not to mention it makes it easier to identify people in real life, and some people may want to keep their internet and real life separate.

Personally, I don't care either way. There's not a lot going on in my life that a dedicated internet creep would find interesting, but I use Frenzify on practically everything, anyway. Other than twitter, that's what I go by online.

Because no one wants their real name associated with the sick, disgusting, vulgar anime they watch on the internet.... I know I don't!
