Revealing more personal information than absolutely necessary publicly can cause any number of problems - whether it's people dropping your docs and asking others to harass you in real life or prank calling you to potentially losing a job or promotion because of what you've said or posted online. The barrier of anonymity provided by a handle allows for members to interact with one another without immediately compromising their personal information unless an individual user decides to post their information (or some malcontent decides to hack for it).

Similarly, the curtain acts as an enabler of expression. By masking who you are, you're able to more readily express bits of your personality that you're more likely to hide from the people you know personally. In a way, rather than the mask you present to others, you reveal your self free of inhibitions.

1) I'm bored with using it. I use my real name on FB and Youtube, and I use it offline. I don't feel like seeing it here, too.
3) Using my real name feels formal, which tends to loan an air of awkwardness online, to me.
4) My alias helps avoid confusion. My first, middle, and last names aren't very unique, and my first name is also that of a month. I don't want to have my attention caught by someone with a similar screen name, and anyone who utters "aeb0717" can't be referring to someone other than myself. I particularly dislike thinking that someone was referring to me, when they were actually talking about the month.
5) Aliases are more fun. They allow for more creativity. Also, I may feel like a boring hen, if I were to go by my name and then see users with something cool.
6) Anonymity lends some honesty. Although people may adopt a persona online, it isn't uncommon for them to spit out what they really feel.
7) Unless I only use my first name, I'm often constrained by a letter limit. I usually can't fit my name, especially if I were to include my middle name.

real .. what is real.. a 'screen' name is real its a name and it exists .. so it is your name at the appointed area of usage ... so this question is impossible to answer as its asking why not use a real name instead of a real name ... ---- sigh

I just feel more comfortable using a screen name. Also I don't think that it is needed to say my real name in a site like this.

<-------- My screen name IS my real name when you get rid of the number three.

Hmm maybe because of security or privacy reasons or they want to have a new name. A site may reflect a form of a 'world' so some may want to create a new 'self' or identity... or it could be just because they want to have another name^^

I use my username as a meaning, that's it.. If someone wants to befriend me I'd tell them my name; I actually like my name. I'll say this though; with the right information you can find out a whole lot about someone if you know how to look.

well if you're one of those unlucky people who can't seem to find anyone else with the same name you quickly realize that putting up your real name is a bad idea doesn't take people long to narrow down where you are...

I could use my real name if I wanted, but I simply like pretending to be something that I'm not.

Discrimination, like it or not there are employers (usually for higher level jobs) that will scour the internet for your name to try to determine your personality and potential performance based upon arbitrary statistics and stereotypes... Games and anime are still looked down upon. Background checks can even turn up your aliases that are connected to your real name (though links and stuff) so it is best to obscure and use multiple aliases whenever possible.

If it weren't for that and data mining I wouldn't really have an issue with it. Any picture I may post here that has my face in it would be unique to just this site so that it cannot be reverse image searched easily. Unfortunately due to the general hatred in this world you have to be vigilant at information control.

For me, it's more safety reasons. I mean I don't want random strangers to know my name and then attempt to harass me. There are a lot of people who are on this site who are younger individuals (under 18) who don't know how to deal with those kinds of people who might attack or harass them. Also, having personal information in the hands of these individuals can be worse because it can give strangers access to your personal information with just a little research and the internet is pretty powerful, especially if you're trying to find someone.

Maybe it's paranoia, but I like to be anonymous on the internet so I don't have to worry about these things and if anyone tries to harass me, I can block/delete them and never have to worry again (hence the point of these features) and you never know how far people will do (especially if there is something mentally wrong with them). I'm not trying to scare anyone either, but that's how I see it at least.
