"Blushies" are fairly common in anime and a character's face turning various shades of red for embarrassment is as well. But this year I've noticed a different trope where the character's ears turn red from embarrassment, especially when the character is viewed from behind.

I've been watching anime for many years and can't recall seeing this used before. Have I just missed it, been watching the wrong shows, or is this a" birthing" of a new anime trope?

I never actually noticed it, but since my own ears turn red from embarrassment, I hope it's a thing.

Well, usually when blushing, it's the face that "reddens" due to blood rising to the head.
Now, since there is no blood rush in the hair, you don't see it when the character faces the other direction.
However, the ears are the one part of the skin exposed in this situation,
so I guess that's why they turn red?

I have seen this done once before for a side character in one episode of Aria: the Natural.

It's a bit hard to tell in this picture, but this old man exhibits the trope.

I've never seen it anywhere else though. I thought it was rather weird and had only heard of the trope after I saw this episode. I don't think it's a new trope - but I haven't seen it that much.

I think if you have pale skin, the ears do turn red when you experience an overwhelming emotion like embarrassment, anger or excitement.
