that one sceen in elfen lied where child lucy just watched her dog beaten to death and just saw her 'friend' hide a smile - then killed them all. that moment where she is standing all alone in the blood stained room.

That was horrible. I felt sorry for her and the puppy both.

Here are some anime and video games that I had those morbid moments that were just traumatizing in one way or another. I pretty much haven't been watching anything other than anime as of late, and while I have been playing fewer video games as of late, there are some moments that are still quite fresh in my mind. So with that, here are some examples of moments that were memorable for being depressing.

Anime

Guilty Crown

Psycho-Pass

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Voices of a Distant Star

Video Games

Final Fantasy VII

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon

Tales of the Abyss

There are more, but these are the ones that stand out.

Mirai Nikki

And pretty much anything with animal violence. I hate it when animals are harmed

Hmm

Anime
Hunter x Hunter

One Piece

Manga
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro

Film
The Pianist is just such a devastating film from start to finish. Amazing, but absolutely wrenching. (It's not a documentary so I think I can shelve it in fiction?)

Literature
The Sparrow. Hard to spoil because you know from the very beginning that everything is going to go terribly wrong and all of the characters that you helplessly come to love will die, still, it was awfully sad. I am not sure if I would call it depressing despite this. It's a brilliant book.

I tend to find it the most sad when people are trapped into choices that will ruin them and there is nothing else that could have been done. Or when people pay for their earlier mistakes just at the moment when they find their happiness.
