I have no idea if this topic already exists, and knowing Crunchyroll, it could (if there is one, please inform me and delete this thread) but sometimes I think if the cast of characters looks appealing, cute, cool, handsome/beautiful, or has a character design in some way, shape, or form that makes people look again, that people are more inclined to try out a show, even if the show is just plain terrible or sounds terrible. Now don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that there cannot be a good story to where there are attractive characters, but there can also be some bad ones.

I ask this mainly because I know sex appeal plays a huge part in marketing off shows, consumer items and goods, etc, but anime is a different medium, to where you can have people look however you want, but they are still ultimately drawings nonetheless and are not the real people that people idolize religiously or follow around regarding their personal lives (I'm looking at you, tabloids!).

Oftentimes, this phenomena doesn't always have to be about sex appeal either, but it can simply be what is pleasing to the eye, and this is where the halo effect plays a role. In psychology, the halo effects suggests that if something is pleasing, attractive, or inspires positive connotation upon first glance that positive assumptions often follow and such bias can get in the way of judging things objectively.

Whether it be sex appeal, the halo effect, or some other factor that plays a role in this, what is your experience? Do you often find yourself drawn to anime with cute/cool looking characters or characters that are attractive in some way, shape, for form? Do you think that by doing so, that it is a good or bad thing? Tell me your thoughts on the matter.

Decided to edit cuz I think I didn't understand the halo effect thing too well.
Simple answer: Yes, cuteness is the major factor in my deciding to watch a series. If it has cuteness, I will most certainly watch it without a second thought. But, that doesn't mean I won't give things that aren't cute a try.
Cuteness is just top priority, not a factor for bias. There are shows full of cute girls that are bad , and there are some that lack them and are great.

I don't really think it's a bad thing, since if it wasn't for that, I probably would still be stuck watching only the mainstream shounen series.
Reason I decided to go and try something away from the mainstream, was because I saw some vids featuring cute magical girls (namely Lyrical Nanoha and Shugo Chara) and cute girls playing instruments (K-on!) among others, on youtube.
I have always been fond of all forms of cute things, so seeing all those warm and cute girls definitely sparked me up to try to deviate from the usual Anime, and am far from regretting it.

I try out most shows. Rather than having criteria for shows that I will try out, I have criteria for shows I typically don't bother checking out, because I likely won't enjoy them (and I watch too many shows as it is).

* Sports shows - not interested
* Cute girls being cute shows - These shows typically have nothing going for them story wise, character wise, or otherwise. The draw is supposedly the "cute girls", but they typically try too hard to make them cute and the girls end up not being cute, so it falls on it's head.
* Cute boys being cute shows - See above and add to it that I am not attracted to guys.
* Yuri/Yaoi - No thanks.
* Magical girls shows (deconstructions/parodies exempted) - Typically very boring
* Card/Poke battle shows

I could care less about how the characters look like. If I like the genre, I'll give it a try. Whether I continue watching or not is based on the show as a whole (plot, art, etc).

I sometimes do watch shows for the 'cute girl factor', but that alone is not satisfying if the cute girls are uninteresting and/or underdeveloped characters, or if the show in question has no engaging plot.

Cuteness is n. 1 factor for me but my definition of "cute" might sound quite custom, what I mean is that when a character is able to convey a waterfall of emotions and sensations (love/kindness/happiness or despair/sadness and such) at first sight, that is what I find cute/interesting, and that story will automatically fall in my "to watch" library. The quality of drawings and animations for me means a lot, because the better a character is drawn/animated and the better it can communicate the emotions that the story author wanted to convey to the fans/viewers.

What got me was Inuyasha and how cute the two(InuyashaxKagome) were! When I was first starting watching anime, I ended up watching the entire series of that show because the fight scenes were awesome.. *Cough* and I wanted them to get together *Cough*. Yeah, there were probably other Anime's that lured me in with there cuteness!

Good looking characters do help me enjoy the stories, but it's not always. Like I can't get into Uta no prince-sama, even though the characters are good looking, but I can get into Free! because the characters have some substance, at least.

I mean Flowers of Evil characters aren't considered cute by the majority of people, but that is my #1 anime out of all the ones I've watched.

Sometimes yes, it does help in my choosing, but most of the time it's the plot that peaks my interest.

Not really. I can't say there was any anime I watched just for the eye candy alone. I've been hooked by theme songs, show themes or character PERSONALITIES, but not just looks alone.

Usually I just try everything because it is easier.

But I notice the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things series rarely ever get chopped off my list. So.... maybe?

Yep but it doesn't mean that the story is good as well. For example: Diabolik Lovers. The characters are very handsome but the story is no way near good. So what I'm trying to say is that even if the story is horrible, when the characters are cute I might watch it. But sometimes these kind of animes turn out to be worth watch animes like Free! Iwatobi Swim Club.

There are several shows that fit that mold where the characters are the main draw, while it doesn't have much else to offer. A few examples include Amnesia, Galilei Donna, Last Exile: Fam of the Silver Wing, and Day Break Illusion. In the case of Amnesia, the heroine is cute while the boys are well-designed, but the story just lacks spark. For Galilei Donna, I love the main characters, but the story just goes to show why I'm not a big fan of Yasuomi Umetsu in the first place. For the Last Exile sequel, the artwork by Renge Murata is great as expected, but the show's story is just poorly constructed. And then there is Day Break Illusion with nice characters, but one of the laziest stories I have ever watched.

And then there is a show like Place to Place that I wanted to watch because of the characters, but unlike the others that I described this one actually has a pretty good story and has a lot more to offer than just the cute characters in it.
