Designs are one thing. I read the synopsis to see if it is even going to be interesting. I also wait and hold off till it is finished and go by word of mouth if it is worth watching. Also, if there is a harem involved, it is an auto skip for me. The only time I just went with the flow was with Rozen Maiden, which I watched on a whim, and I did end up enjoying that series quite a bit.

Sometimes, there's usually more than one thing that draws me towards an anime but characters are a big factor. However, that doesn't mean I'll watch exclusively because of the characters. If the story is a piece of shit and it ends up being pure hell to watch then I wont just sit around watching it due to the cuteness of the characters. Cute is the ultimate justice, but you need more than cute characters to make a show.

I will often fall to this tactic. I do put a lot of stock in animation style on if I'll watch a show or not, some shows people say are amazing (like kill la kill) I can't watch more than a few minutes because I don't really like the art style, my preferred art style just happens to be that which is accompanied by cute girls.

Of course I will snag the bait, check it out and if the anime is to my liking I will watch it, if not, I dont. Sore dake da

Same here.

I have to like the experience the show is attempting to provide, cute or attractive characters can factor into that but in my personal experience it's nowhere near enough to keep me around just by itself.

This DVD cover got me interested in Full Metal Panic! and Fumoffu.
Cute girls do get my attention but if the anime isn't good I will drop it.

I don't watch an anime simply for the character designs. If the characters look really cute or cool, but the synopsis doesn't interest me, I won't watch it. I have a tendency to watch anime featuring cute characters, but that's mainly because most of those anime fall into the Comedy and Slice-of-Life genres, and I like Comedy/Slice-of-Life anime. So in this case, I like anime with cute characters by association, not because of the character designs themselves.

Cute girls and nice character designs can certainly get me interested and make me give it a shot, but it will in no way keep me with the show if everything else fails.

Not really, but if the character designs is too ugly or weird I do not watch it.

I find that I do because if I like a show's story but don't like how the main characters look I'll be too distracted and annoyed to be able to enjoy it. thus If I only try the animes where I like how the characters look or at least don't dislike how they look then I won't have to waste time watching ones I won't be able to properly enjoy. I must admit however that if I like how characters look then I'll lower my criteria on story a bit.

I always believed some fans could care less about the plot and character development, when it comes to attractive characters and pairing.

Those fans remind about how in the real world people tend care more about looks than anything else. At least that is how I see it.

I decide to watch an anime usually by:
Cute girl. Cute loli. Cute bishoujo. Cute girl. Cute yuri. Cute Yandere. Cute tsundere. Beautiful girls..... Other visually appealing things.
(This is why all my stories turn into all female dystopian apocalypses... OTL)

But, if the anime is boring, I just drop it without a single regret.

Hmmm. I think cute characters are definitely a draw for me, but they're not the be all and end all of a show. I will say that they do play a major influence in whether or not i'll check it out though - but only if I have nothing else to go on.

Take this season for instance- there are three shows I can use as examples: Hanayamata, Magimoji Rurumo, and Aldnoah Zero.

Hanayamata and Magimoji are both shows I can definitively say that I looked into because the characters looked cute. I loved the former and disliked the latter, but the cuteness did draw me in. Aldnoah Zero, on the other hand, drew me in purely by its premise (since i hadn't seen any images of the characters).

There are also many other shows that I am drawn to by the premise even though the character designs don't appeal to me (like Akagi and the Eccentric Family). Finally, some shows have a premise that doesn't draw me in even though I think the characters are adorable. One example that comes to mind is Acchi Kocchi (which I still haven't worked up enough interest in to try).

So to sum it all up

I think cute characters are definitely a draw, but only if I know nothing else of the premise.

All my favorite animes don't have an outstanding animation (Bertserk, Monster, fantastic children and Terra E) and yet they are the best. I would have missed such great characters and stories if I would have paid attention to the fact that there are no "cool-cute looking" characters.

One exception (like everything in life) is Free! Eternal summer (and Iwatobi swim club) the characters are ALL either cool, cute, sexy, hot etc etc excellent animation and characters+story is also good. I started watching because of the good-looking guys and stayed because of their personalities and cool plot.

No, my first thought with new anime is what the genre is. Followed by learning which studio produced it, then I read recommendations/reviews to determine if it's a good story with interesting characters or not, then animation quality factors in. At the end of the day I do appreciate cute girls, but it's definitely never my first consideration.

I decide by looking at the story summary and genre tags. Visuals can be a good indicator of what to expect but there are exceptions so I don't trust them that much.
"Moe" looking characters will only snub my interest, not spark it, because those anime usually don't have much else going for them (totally being subjective here) and their stories bore me to tears. Also, honestly, they look like cartoon bugs with giant eyes more than people to me.

Male characters from reverse harem anime (usually based on otome games I think) do not look appealing to me at all. I'm often amused by how weird their clothes or hairstyles look. LOL. They don't really look like hot eye candy to me. Plus, the plots of these anime are usually lackluster. If I want to play a otome game, I'll play one myself, not watch someone else playing it.

If anything, when I find the story appealing, I will watch it despite the "cute" or "cool" looking characters, not because of them.
When I find a character cute/cool, it's not just because they're visually pleasant, but more because of what they do and how they act.
