I've always wondered about the answer to this question. Can anyone provide me with a sufficient answer?

Flowers of Evil is probably the only anime where the characters look 100% Japanese. Yet, it got a huge backlash for making the characters look Japanese... see where I'm going with this?

It's for superficial reasons. People want to look at characters that have big eyes, colourful eyes and colourful hair; they don't want to look at characters that are modelled after the average Japanese person. These features happen to coincide with what White people have.

I'm not saying the average Japanese person isn't good looking, even in Western society, their movies don't involve the average White person either--it has to be someone who is above average to make it as a "moviestar". People like to look at beautiful things. You don't pay a movie ticket to look at average joe's and plain jane's having a romantic time.

Interesting, I don't really see anime characters as "white" or even "Japanese". It could just be that I find it difficult to translate what an anime character would look like in the real world but then I don't see a need to either.

I do agree that they're usually drawn the way they are to be visually pleasing (although it doesn't always work out and obviously tastes apply).

The short answer is because Tezuka drew them that way, and he was influenced by early Disney and Fleicher cartoons.

When I look at characters in anime/manga, they do look Japanese. For instance, the hair, clothing, build, and even face. Now for the eyes, they'll make the eyes more big or colorful to make the character more noticeable so that he/she can stand out. Its the same with the hair color. But it goes to show one problem in society, and that is: Why can't we look past race/ethnicity?
