Oh please. People are in denial as usual, or trying to pass off something for something else.

1) The majority of characters do not look Japanese in the SLIGHTEST. If anyone who didn't know anime at all looked at the art, they would naturally think the characters are white. Sure, they are still cartoons and features are exaggerated in cartoons, but their features are far more white than Asian any day.

2) If anime was really being true to Japanese looks, the characters would generally look much much closer to Mulan from Disney's Mulan.

When Disney for example, animates white and non-white characters, they make them look like cartoony versions of their race or ethnicity. When Japan makes anime, they look much, much closer to white.

How funny.

3) As soon as there is a non European/Japanese person (ESPECIALLY a person with dark or stereotypically darker skin) they immediately get colored in, and if they are Black they get stereotypical features applied.

4) If they character is Black, you can be sure that anime will suddenly give that character larger lips, kinker hair, wider noses. Almost always. This is very unfair, because if they are going to do this, then the Japanese characters should NOT have funky colored hair, massive, multi colored eyes and should look more Japanese as well.

5) There are many animes and mangas out there that feature a Black character. Their features are almost always suddenly drawn in. If you're going to draw in stereotypically thicker lips, wider noses - why can't you also draw in the typical Asian face of narrow eyes, rounder faces? If the character happens to be darker skinned but not Black (like Middle-Eastern or Indian for example)- their skin is just colored in. (Which is funny, because a lot of Middle-Eastern people and some Indian people have lighter/very light skin, and they are Caucasian by default - look at their features). If you're going to color in skin, why can't you keep the Asian characters' hair ALL dark ,and their eyes all dark as well? What nonsense!

6) No one as usual wants to mention this, but Asians LOVE European features, they LOVE THEM. I as an Asian know this and this worship of white features DISGUSTS ME. Many Asians want the stereotypically bigger eyes, longer noses, naturally fair skin, etc. Take a look at the madness that is "wanting to look more Western" plastic surgery across Asia, and especially in South Korea. Or just take a look at how Europeans are worshiped or at least treated much better than non-Europeans, or people of non-European descent.

Flowers of Evil is probably the only anime where the characters look 100% Japanese. Yet, it got a huge backlash for making the characters look Japanese... see where I'm going with this?

It's for superficial reasons. People want to look at characters that have big eyes, colourful eyes and colourful hair; they don't want to look at characters that are modelled after the average Japanese person. These features happen to coincide with what White people have.

I'm not saying the average Japanese person isn't good looking, even in Western society, their movies don't involve the average White person either--it has to be someone who is above average to make it as a "moviestar". People like to look at beautiful things. You don't pay a movie ticket to look at average joe's and plain jane's having a romantic time.

"...it got a huge backlash for making the characters look Japanese..."

Self hatred and European-looks worship.

Moving on...

Difference is, when Western society casts good looking whites - they are still part of the same race. Japanese anime character (99%) of them do not look like they are of the Asian race whatsoever.

All this to me is connected to "looking more Western plastic surgery", "how whites are looked up to/treated", "wanting only white teachers", "featuring whites in ads", etc. in Asia and among Asians. It comes across many a time as self hatred, though it you pose this question to them and tell it like it is, you'll be greeted with denial.

And then you can also ask: why, if an anime character can have multi colored hair/multi colored eyes...WHY must their skin tone be almost exclusively lighter?

Answer? They want European features and it is echoed 100% in their anime.

You can read my comment that I wrote about this in full a few comments above this. (The one with the picture of Mulan posted the first time).

They usually don't look particularly Caucasoid, to me. I find that they tend to have a weird, inhuman look to them. In fact, the facial proportions of many anime/manga/manhua characters remind me of bushbabies. Hell, when I mimic the average anime/manga/manhua styles when I draw, I recognize that, realistically, my characters look freakish. I feel something similar when I study character models from shows like Frozen, Betty Boop, etc...

I scoff as I mull over how unrealistic the touted "White look" actually is.

We should start a campaign against the anime industry; we demand more darker skin toned characters and characters who look more like Asians than Caucasians.

Somebody needs to have the guts to tackle the issue openly and honestly... I agree... this is somewhat representative of their underlying hatred of themselves.

Ugh, people always want to pull the race card for no reason <__<

If the few black characters have black features(thicker lips, wide noses) then that's racist!, if the few black characters don't have those features (lack of thick lips, wide nose and have green/blue eyes) then that's racist! I have seen people complain on other forums about black characters with blue eyes....nothing ever satisfies and people will always complain for anything.

These are cartoons, they don't have to be realistic and if the characters look "white" to you, so what? they don't look human to me with those wide eyes or weird colored eyes. Imagine if all anime was with black hair/black eyes characters...with eyes so small you could hardly see their color...boring...and not saying that the Japanese natural look is boring but too much of the same thing is boring, just like if all anime was with characters with blonde hair and blue eyes only...it would also be boring so I'm happy with variations of hair and eye color. The big eyes is just typical of anime....white skin, I haven't met a black Japanese person, not saying they don't exist but it's very rare.

I have to admit, I do like it when there's a bit more variety of skin tones and character designs in anime. I do notice that quite a few shows have slight differences in colour between characters even if they're all light skinned, that can be interesting.

That said, I think it's risky to assume that there's a problem and that they draw a particular way because of "self-hate" or whatever. You'd really have to do a study first and social research can be a nightmare. Obsession with the "exotic" and a dislike of what seems "normal" is definitely a problem that happens but I'm not sure it has anything to do with the way anime characters are drawn. Even if it was the basis for it, for most it could simply be following trends without having the same core reasons for drawing that way.

Also, if you start trying to force a change in the way that characters are drawn you'd simply ruin creative freedom and wouldn't really be dealing with the supposed issue. If someone sees an anime character and feels that they're being told that a particular appearance is superior then they likely have a problem already and I don't think it has anything to do with the way that anime is drawn.

No. I oppose the idea that only members of a particular group can judge anything even remotely connected to that particular group. Also, making a generalisation based on the opinion of a single member of a group isn't particularly helpful.

It's also worth noting that drawing a light-skinned character in manga is much easier since it doesn't require a great deal of shading or similar. I guess the same would apply to lighter hair colours. I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this so far. I suppose something similar would apply to anime (using similar colours to make the work easier or whatever).
