Hello all

Recently picked up a shiny new kit a Meng AMX-30B, and it looks darn sweet.

First foray into tanks really, I've made a tonne of planes and some gundams, but my greatest interest lies in tanks at the moment.

Only thing I'm not looking forward to is putting the tracks together... 80 links on each side, each link is two pieces!
Oh well :P

Just trying to think of the best colour scheme... Nato Camo or French Olive Drab would be historically accurate, but I'm not sure if I want to go for that haha
Thinking either winter (with dark green and blue camo, with a worn whitewash on top, plus weathering) or a desert camouflage scheme...

Anyway, *hopefully* I'll get some things of it up on here as I build it, will likely be starting on Saturday...

Anyone else build these?

Okey doke,

Finished building in two days, everything except the Commander's Cupola and those goddamn tracks xD

Here's some piccies:

(sorry it's sideways) FRONT:

BACK:

If I'm honest, this kit is incredible. Loads of parts, all moulded perfectly, and the fit is probably the best I've ever worked on. The tracks look to be very good, and the suspension has working torsion bars and hydraulic shock absorbers!
The turret moves freely and the main gun and 20mm gun can be positioned as well. 10/10 for sure!

I'm off on Holiday for a while after this, but will update with painting etc after that
Chosen to do worn nato camouflage over an olive drab base, with a possible worn/damaged winter whitewash over the top. I'll be using Halfords Plastic Primer and then Airbrushing Tamiya acrylics, in case you're interested

Little bit more, did the cupola and started on tracks.

Cupola is nice, but the searchlight holder snapped as it was cut from the sprue, which is a bit of a shame.

Tracks are very good, despite being tedious: 36 out of 160 links down!

They fit nicely on the sprocket as well, which is a relief!

Finished a while ago, have moved onto painting

Primed (halfords plastic spray primer - uber cheap and actually really good), then painted with silver undercoat for chipping through to. Now to decide on olive drab for the french version or NATO camo :O

3 coats of paint are on now, sorry for lack of pictures... -,-

Basically, after the primer I sprayed on a titanium silver coat, then a hairspray layer on top to seal that from water (you'll see why in the next post ) Then French Olive Drab on top of that. Then the exciting (but slightly tedious) bit!

Paint chipping, it's a really nice way of showing paint scratches or marks on scale models, and it looks a bit more realistic than dry brushing. I'll do a how-to thingy in the next post I guess, why not

Got one of the tracks fully assembled, can't be arsed to do the second set at the moment, so we'll see.

Here's the hull:

Close up:

Very rough at this stage, the idea is that this tank is an rely AMX-30B that was first painted in French Army colours, before they switched to NATO camouflage. The NATO camo will go over the top, so paint chipping will show through to both the silver and the olive underneath. It's a bit rough as I said, but it's mainly making sure that weld lines will scrape through to silver more than olive

Here's the turret:

And a close-up:

Not too happy with how rough the chipping on the mantlet is, but as I say, there's more to go on top so it's mostly making sure there's a little silver

Very pleased with the chipping along the exposed edges, the cast number and the outside turret rim, so let's hope it shows through well enough once the NATO camo is chipped through!

Last but not least, these glorious 160 part fully workable tracks xD

Can't wait to paint those... -,-

Anyway, lots more chipping to do, then hairspray, then black NATO undercoat on the bottom and green on top. Then orange and black in pattern on top, before chipping through all three of those. Then it's a sealant layer before dry brushing and weathering
