Hi All;

I've found a 200 (or so) anime theme song playlist to listen to while working on a sewing project and it got me wondering how much of a role does a theme for an anime series play into your enjoyment, or remembrance, of a series? Can an opening theme make or break a series for you? Or are you someone who doesn't care because you watch it once for hints of the upcoming series and then skip it throughout?

I'm finding that I have a very strong emotional response to certain themes depending on how much I enjoyed the series they're tied to. Some plaster a goofy grin on my face as I remember all the romance, some trigger anxiety and suspense, and others make me giggle. I know from my own viewing experience that there are some series with great music throughout, and others that just make me roll my eyes but I've never turned away from a series because I was completely annoyed with the theme.

How about you?

A good OST is a HUGE bonus to my enjoyment of the show.

Samurai Champloo's sountrack is god-tier.

absolutely, I mean can you even imagine watching things like miyazaki movies and key shows without their amazing OST's? imagine watching AOT without first having the opening to totally rev you up first try imagining watching clannad without its insert songs, as an example, during episode 18 of after story(you know which scene)...not so sad NOW is it? when I watched death note for the first(and only) time, the OP/ED's almost made me quit because they were so irritating to sit through, I wonder why I didn't just skip them? for me, anime is 30% music, 40% characters and 30% setting/story.

It's the best of both worlds! Without an epic soundtrack, that fight would never be the same, that dramatic scene wouldn't be so dramatic, etc...
My point is that music gives more emotions and more life to the moment. Also everyone remembers an anime with an awesome opening. So music definitely makes an anime much better! I always remember the soundtrack of Death Note, those psychological battles would never be the same without it. Also FMA:B has one of the best OSTs i've heard.

sometimes if an anime has a killer opener/ending/ost, it really gets me excited for the anime itself.

attack on titan is one of them. kill la kill is the other.

Although I'd like to think that I like anime for the show itself, the music plays a huge part for me. I love instrumental songs or songs where I don't understand the lyrics, and anime has both of those. If the anime has incredible music, I start to really enjoy it even if the show itself isn't that great *cough*Guilty Crown*cough*.

I love a good soundtrack.
Code Geass has a beautiful one that fits the show perfectly.

I couldn't agree more. The first few bars of the theme for Attack on Titan, or Black Lagoon, and I'm on the edge of my seat, eyes wide open. If I'm binging on a series then I'll start humming the theme while at work because I'm just jonsing for my fix. (possible addict - may need professional help.) Other themes have meshed so well with my non-anime musical tastes that they've made it to my personal musical playlist so when they pop up in my car I'm instantly reliving the series.

Bad music would never ruin an anime for me, but good music will definitely make it better. Like, Nagi no Asukara is alright but it's soundtrack is super good.

And I kind of have the same feeling, OP. Some soundtracks make me remember certain things and feel certain emotions depending on what the scenarios were when the songs were used. Kind of like how certain smells take you back to specific places or experiences in life.

Music is quite essential for anime, in my opinion. It makes me incredibly happy whenever any anime as OST I'm fond of. And it's also a key of nostalgia for later in the future. For example, whenever I hear the opening for Cowboy Bebop and tear up and get a little pumped at the same time. And whenever I hear "dango daikazoku" from Clannad, there is a chance of me already sobbing half way into the song; because it has so much more meaning behind it besides a family of pastries, just from the story line of Clannad itself.

I also get really excited during anime that center around idols. Like AKB0048, Macross Frontier, K-On... All that good stuff. A good opening AND an animated performance in almost every episode? Yes, please.

Music can never make it worse but only better.. I mean take OSTs such as Angel Beats and Clannad for example.

for me its always just a bonus. I never feel like they ever take anything away from the anime by having bad music. its just cool if the musics really good as I can buy and listen to the soundtrack.

Of course the OST is a huge part of my enjoyment of an anime. It's one of the three things aside from voice acting and animation that makes it different from a manga.

To be honest the opening music of the anime is 30 to 50 percent my enjoyment of the anime. It doesn't mean i wouldn't watch the show if the opening music is not my taste. I have watched a lot of show just because they have very cool opening music they just motivate me to stick with the show, and if the opening music is good i know at last i will like half of the next episode.
