Synopsis

Kaito Kuroba, a normal teenage student whose father is often absent. When his father dies under mysterious circumstances, he is made aware of his father's secret identity; a famous international criminal known as International Criminal 1412: the Phantom Thief, and that he was murdered by a mysterious organization for refusing to aid them in retrieving the "Pandora Gem"; a mystical stone said to shed a "tear" during the passing of a particular comet (often called the 'Volley Comet'), the consumption of which bestows immortality.

He vows to prevent the organization from gaining immortality, and assumes his father's identity as he begins his quest for the gem. His only clues as to the gem's location are that it glows red under the full moon and that it is a doublet: a gem hidden within a larger gem. Thus, it would have to be a relatively large one with a bizarre history, and always stored in a place that never receives moonlight. He thus researches and steals famous priceless gems with odd histories from incredibly well-defended areas, and always returns them after the very next full moon.

A lot of people don't know this but Detective Conan is technically a spin-off of Magic Kaito. Crazy right? A bit like how The Simpsons is a spin-off of The Tracy Ullman Show.

Anyways I loved the OVAs so I'm curious to see what A-1 does with this.

The Simpsons shorts used to air on The Tracey Ullman Show. However, nothing related to Conan appeared in Magic Kaito.. If you look at both series, it looks that Magic Kaito is the spinoff. Now, as to whether Gosho had planned from the beginning to add Kaito Kid to the Detective Conan world, that's up for debate.

I was happy when I read the announcement, but I thought TMS was going to handle the series. It's another studio, which means they'll probably treat the TV specials as if they didn't happen. It also makes me worried that they're going to change the voice actors. If they do, we're going to continue hearing Yamaguchi Kappei as Kid in Detective Conan, and somebody else in Magic Kaito. Either ways, I'm looking forward to it.

I've only read one chapter of Conan on Viz App and it was pretty darn good. Too bad the length of the series and lack of digital availability keeps me from going on even further. Since this is simply a very short spin-off in comparison I'll be looking forward to it.

That is a wonderful news! Though I'm surprised that it will be animated by A-1 Pictures instead of TMS.

Hehe, Kaito had his own manga way before Detective Conan. Gosho just put him into Detective Conan for whatever reason, but I think it's cool to have a Lupin type of baddie for Conan to outwit as opposed to all those sadistic murderers.

Ok, so I was worried about how the animation looked in the trailers, and after watching the 1st episode I can't come to like the art style.
It doesn't resemble Gosho's art which is a problem to me. TMS was and still able to produce similar art to Gosho's given how they've been working on Detective Conan for almost 19 years.

I thought everything else was done in a good way. Sticking to the manga as close as possible, the voice acting, and the music were great. Next week they're going to animate chapter 18, which is kind of understandable since that has major main plot development. We aren't going to get anywhere since the manga basically doesn't have a continuation.

It was a good first episode but I can't get over how different the art is.

Haven't seen Detective Conan yet but from what I understand, I don't really need to right? A friend of mine did recommend me to though but I'm not sure yet with that many episodes..

Anyways, it was a good episode. It almost reminded me of Kindachi in a way with the whole mystery/detective-like gimmicks. I recently finished reading the manga up to chapter 30 so I'm hoping for a decent adaptation. The ED song is sweet also.

Nope. Unless,

I also read that some episodes in this adaptation will cover cases from Detective Conan that included Kaito Kid, but this time in Kid's perspective. I'm very interested in seeing those.

Okay, thanks for answering this. Are there any other cross over characters from both series?
