If you want to get technical, Legends 1-3 aren't really Final Fantasy games either--In Japan, they are part of the SaGa series. Once again, they got a name change for the US market both because the SaGa series was not yet ported to the US and because putting the Final Fantasy moniker on them made them sell better in the competitive US market. Americans are notoriously skeptical of new RPG series, and Square made the safest move for the time.

I'm also surprised noone has yet mentioned owning Final Fantasy-Mystic Quest for SNES.

Oops, I guess redgarnettk did mention mystic quest, I just didn't notice. It seems to be a forgotten title in the series, and somewhat understandably so, since it has a well-earned reputation of being oversimplified. However, it does have some of the best sprite work of any SNES RPG, featuring highly detailed (albeit somewhat silly) enemies.

But you're not really hard core unless you own Final Fantasy for NES!!!!

Well...I suppose the Chocobo games, Legend titles, Kingdom Hearts, Ehrgeiz, etc games shouldn't be considered Final Fantasy games because they only contain the same title or some characters.

And Xrn, I'm not sure if this was just you forgot some titles, but you forgot Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy II (SNES), and the original Final Fantasy (SNES).

It doesn't really make you a "hardcore" fan of Final Fantasy if you have the NES Final Fantasy. It's difficult to find and would limit mostly older players to being the most "hardcore". I don't even like the series all that much and I have that game.

I don't really like Tactics Advance as much as the original, partially because of the whole "taste of FFXII" thing. Not that I have a problem with Final Fantasy XII--I love it--I just think they could have made Tactics advanced a better game if they had given it its own unique setting. Also, I didn't buy it to play on my GBA, I bought it to play on my Gamecube.

As for Final Fantasy (NES) being difficult to find, It's actually a lot easier to get your hands on than either of the American SNES releases. And my age has nothing to do with owning it; I became a fan of the series fairly recently (FFIX), and purchased myself both an NES and SNES only in the past year or so.

I also agree with Xrn on the subject of Dirge of Cerberus. I (luckily) only borrowed the game, and it almost made me cry to see how poorly it had been done. If it had been my copy, I would have destroyed it, but instead I simply returned it to my nive fanboy friend, who immediately gained the whole of my sympathies.

Dirge of Cerberus is just fine... as long as you don't actually think of it as a game. It's just one long glorious cutscene with a really mediocre shooter tossed in for not-so-good measure. At least it looks pretty

Likewise, I didn't get inot anime till later in life. The first Final Fantasy I played was VII... on the PS2... (which i mainly bought just to play final fantasy games and watch dvds)

PS2 was my first system... now i own damned near everything from the Atari 2600 to the Sega Master System to Dreamcast, and in the not too distant future some random next gen console (prolly wii the way its looking). I think last time i counted i have about a dozen systems in one form or another, and i never really played video games till i got out of high school (console games at least).
