Does anybody know what the source material for Kill la Kill was? Light novel, Manga, Original Anime?

With the manga coming over to the US soon, I was a bit curious if it's the source or just follows the anime.

It's an original anime, but it's not unusual for a manga to add to or expand on bits and pieces of the story it's adapting.

From what i'm seeing on MAL & Wiki. The guy doing the manga is the original story man and it was put out @ the very same time as the anime so they were going on at the same time which made me curious.

An anime can be in pre-production for years, and I assume the story is finalized awhile before they actually start into production. It's not uncommon for the manga to precede the anime it's based on by a few weeks or even months.

That way they can drum up interest, and the anime will quickly catch up to and pass the manga anyway.

It's great that it's the same writer though, it's possible they'll include things in the manga they couldn't fit into the anime.
