I've realized something. A lot of visual novel protagonists have undiagnosed mental health issues. Shirou Emiya has a Savior Complex, Kazami Yuuji has severe PTSD and low self worth, Rintaro Okabe is paranoid....I could go on. But is it just visual novel protagonists that seem to have serious, undiagnosed mental health problems?

Just to further prove my point, I, the protagonist of this entire world, am insane. I also have ADD. Clearly I'm right.

Discuss.

List of Mentally Ill Characters -

Kazami Yuuji : Severe PTSD and low self worth that stems from it. PTSD stems from childhood trauma.

Rintaro Okabe : Paranoid, delusional, narcissistic. Common symptoms of Antisocial Personality Disorder, as well as others.

Shirou Emiya : Savior Complex and possibly PTSD, due to childhood trauma.

Shinji Ikari : Overwhelming depression.

Lucy : Really need me to explain this one?

Most people from Higurashi. Heck, any of 07th Expansion characters.

Yuno Gasai.

All Yanderes.

I honestly don't think Rintarou has a mental illness. He is what I would call... an eccentric person.

if you're looking for characters with some sort of mental problems, most of them can be found in the anime, "The pet girl of sakurasou". Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing this anime; this is one my favourite anime of all time.

I'd pick a madman over a harem-wimp protagonist any day

You say undiagnosed like they need to be diagnosed (I could be wrong, you may not mean it that way). I feel they're fine as they are, they don't need to be drugged or brainwashed in a half assed attempt to make them "normal" or to try and "fix" them. Honestly, I would call a lot of those traits, not mental illness, and those traits are what makes them interesting and who they are. Obviously I'm not a big fan of the mental health professions.

Lucy from Elfin Lied is the only mentally ill protagonist I can think of right now.

Narcissism and low self worth are the only ones he listed that shouldn't be considered mental illness.

Diagnosed as in the author has not specifically said it.

It's because normal characters are boring. Unless something happened to them. I'm saying this from anime experience i haven't read much visual novel.

I'll through in the obligatory Shinji Ikari, 'cause that dude has some major depression issues.

I can't honestly think of too much to actually add to the discussion though

It's not just VN-
this type of thing also exists in manga.
For example, we have Juunichirou Kagami with his ADW (YD).

Also in LN-
we have everyone's favorite Amakusa Kanade with a sever [amusing] case of Absolute Choice.
...and how many protagonists have amnesia?

There are only a few protagonists and supporting characters that could actually be "diagnosed" with a mental disorder. Most of them only show characteristics but not necessarily a specific full blown disorder.

One of the few, like Katsura from School Days, could be diagnosed with a mental disorder because no one in their right mind would be able to cuddle a chopped off head of their boyfriend... Hence, she probably has some kind of Delusional Disorder.

He didn't mention anything about Narcissism. However, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental disorder. Just a btw

I can't help but wonder if all Yanderes suffer from a severe case of bipolar disorder.

Considering what happens to most of the main characters in Higurashi.

Even with that few can probably top Fuminori's problem, which causes him to see the whole world as gore filled, bloody, and people as tentacle beasts. As well as seeing an actual tentacle beast as a cute girl. He is also a medical student, so he hides his condition well so no one realizes anything until its too late.

There are some anime protagonists that seem to have mental issues as well which makes them interesting, though it seems more extreme in the VNs.
