What's the deal with ep 4? Is it because of some crime that happened in Japan that's similar or is it just because there's a problem with the subtitles? It seems strange to have a licensing restriction for just one episode...

It could have been some song or image that showed up in the episode that they didn't have rights to.

I found the issue with Episode 4, I talked to another J-drama fan on ANN and he told me this:

I was actually wondering if this was gonna be an issue when they first announced the license. Katori Shingo, a member of SMAP (Johnny's Entertainment) is a guest star in that episode.

If you don't know what Johnny's Entertainment or Johnny & Associates, they're a big male idol entertainment agency (think of Johnny's Entertainment as Japan's equivalent of South Korea's SM Entertainment). Johnny's Entertainment are the reason why most of the popular J-dramas are not avaliable outside of Japan/Asia. An ANN article will explain why most of J-dramas are not picked up.

Basically, the Japanese talent agencies make it impossible. They usually co-produce, or at least have some major controlling interest in every series their major star is in, and their standards for how that show is to be disseminated in a major market like America is unrealistic. They demand license fees that nobody could ever recoup, insist on ridiculous limitations on artwork and availability, and basically make life hell for all who might attempt to work with them. It's a non-starter.

Japanese talent agencies are also so spoiled for the level of control they have in Japan that they pretty much don't know how to play well in other markets. Agencies are used to writing marketing disguised as content DIRECTLY for publications, dictating how, when and which photos of their stars can be printed where. The agencies use the threat of withholding access to their stars to enforce these demands, and they get surprisingly little blowback. Some agencies also have yakuza ties, just in case someone was considering screwing with them.

In the case of TV dramas, the agency known as Johnny & Associates (Johnny's Jimusho) is thought by many to be one of the most difficult. Johnny's controls Japan's most popular boy bands and their members, from SMAP and Tokio to V6 and Hey! Say Jump!, and get those guys placed in pretty much all of the popular dramas. Johnny's requires approval on every step of the process, and have a reputation for being so difficult that many companies in Japan refuse to even attempt to work with them. To give some indication of how ridiculous they can get, Cyzo Magazine reported earlier this year that with SMAP's Takuya Kimura reprising his lead role for the Space Battleship Yamato live action sequel, the agency is demanding that all the space battles and CG be ditched in favor of human drama with lots of close-ups.

Or in another word from ANN's Justin Servakis:

TV dramas starring any guys from Johnny's Entertainment will likely never be released in the US, unless someone is really, really stupid with their money. Johnny's (and their parent company Onjikyou) controls a lot of the rights of the dramas their talent star in, and they have a non-negotiable minimum license fee that is completely out of whack with what a live action foreign TV series would sell in the States.

I hope that answer your question. See this is one of the reason why Japan sometime piss me off when it comes to drama.

None of their JDramas are usually available to UK users! I'm a Premium user since day one & their catalogue is very limited. Mostly stuff I've already seen ages ago. Still worth it for the few shows I haven't seen & couldn't be bothered to watch before. Hoping they will add more in the future. But really I prefer watching stuff on Crunchyroll as their Roku app is a lot more user friendly than the DF one.

I see, well give it some time, I heard they're expanding the UK catalog, hopefully the J-drama catalog will be avaliable.

EDIT: Just found out Dramafever will bring the K-variety show, Running man to the UK. So that means the J-dramas could be brought over to the UK. So be patient.
