This was pretty much my exact reaction when I first saw FLCL in middle school. I still don't think I completely understand it, but I LOVE that show.

FLCL, though by this point I understand it well enough... I've seen it so much.

and Serial Experiments Lain.

Panty and Stocking

It was the weirdest thing I've ever watched because it's just so stupid!

Also, Serial Experiments Lain, but I think I understood a little more than what others are leading it up to be.

It's gotta be between Inferno Cop and FLCL.

So, of these, I've watched Code Geass R2, SAO, FLCL, Mekaku City Actors, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Gurren Lagann, and I understood all of them except parts of FLCL. The one that I NEVER understood, and I think I would be entertained by today is Paranoia Agent. I remember watching it as a 10 year old and being like, "yep, time for bed. Even I'm not screwed up enough to understand this." Code Geass R2, to understand it, you really do need to watch the first season, and you have to assume that every action of Lelouch will have an impact at some point in the future as well as C2. SAO becomes really easy to comprehend once you get the basics of why people die if they die in game, and if you can get an idea of the creator's motives. I must admit, my brain is quite weird compared to a normal human, and I don't pick up on what others notice, and I notice what others miss, so that is probably part of it. I will say the Neon Genesis Evangelion extra content is trippy, and was specifically made that way to troll fans by the creator.

So many, because so many anime are terribly adapted from source material so some series can literally be non-sequitar after non-sequitar, the director and writer usually offering some sophomoric mental wankery trying justify it all or give the semblance of "meaning."

Ah, I see. It seems like that is a bad thing for you.
