Posted 8/1/14
Moe isn't a genre.. An anime can't be moe because moe is a feeling not a genre.

2006 is the biggest year for anime ever with the 1998 and the 1999-2001 period as a notable mentions. 2014 may not be over yet, but even after 2014 ends I highly doubt 2014 will ever be as great as 2006.

Notable 2006 shows (this one is a doozie):
Akagi
Shakugan no Shana
Black Cat
Mai-Otome
Solty Rei
Blood+
Noein
Mushishi
Karin
Pale Cocoon
Fate/Stay Night
Aria the Natural (S2)
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
School Rumble S2
Gintama
Utawararemono
Air Gear
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Nana
Ouran Host Club
Zegapain
xxxHolic
Saiunkoku Monogatari
Black Lagoon
Hachimitsu to Clover S2
Zero no Tsukaima (S1)
Welcome to the NHK
The Girl who Leapt Through Time
D.Gray-man
Death Note
Ghost Hunt
Code Geass (S1)
Kanon 2006
Hitman Reborn
Kekkaishi
Freedom
Paprika

More than likely forgot some.

I really think the Golden Age of Anime was this era, 1995-2008. Who knows what the future will hold though. As for 2014? Mmm not quite up there yet.

Wow. That's definitely a great year. For a second I was thinking that 2014 would be 1st, but I was wrong. It's definitely not a bad year though (or at least the season is pretty good) Especially with the summer season having a lot of great titles. I mean we definitely had good shows in 2014 or at least some that were popular and were liked by the masses. (They may be mainstream, but they help broaden anime. Therefore helping the industry). For me it's honestly hard to judge this list. It's funny because I sell anime DVDs on Ebay. I've come into contact with almost all of these dvd sets except like 3 which I've heard of. Most of these aren't that good though. These are simply titles that are like pass down through word of mouth (and through the fact that they have dvd sets in english so they're more popular and people can rewatch them). We'll probably have to wait another 5-10 years before we can compare 2014 to 2006 lol.

We got

Kill La Kill (popular)
Nagi No Asukara (good story by P.A works)
Monogatari (popularish)
No Game No Life (popular)
Log Horizon (popularish)
Akame Ga Kill (popular manga)
Aldnoah Zero (seems like an A+ work with all of the good people working on it)
SAO II (popular)
Terror in Resonance (Seems great so far with a score of 8.41 as of right now putting it into top 200 of all time)
Tokyo ESP/Ghoul (I have no idea I just heard from people hyping it up and saying it was decent)
Black Butler (Just because of the first 2 seasons)

1998 had:
Rurouni Kenshin (cont. 1996)
Pokemon (cont. 1997)
Mononoke Hime (1997)
Outlaw Star
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Serial Experiments Lain
Cardcaptor Sakura
Initial D
KareKano
Blue Sub No.6
First Pokemon Movie
Yuu gi Ou

1999~2001 period had:
Rurouni Kenshin (Trust and Betrayal), Hunter x Hunter, GTO, Infinite Ryvius, Blue Gender, Love Hina, Ima Soko ni Iru Boku, One Piece, original Digimon, Star Chronicles Saga (Crest/Banner of the Stars), FLCL, Jin-Rou, Escaflowne, VanDread, Inuyasha, Noir, Read or Die (OVA), Scryed, Shaman King, Fruits Basket, Spirited Away, Hikaru no Go, Hellsing (original)

Just to name a few.

The amount of shows in 1998 is smaller but those shows defined an entire generation of anime viewers. Especially if you extend it back to around 1995/96 (Evangelion saga, Yuu Yuu Hakushou, Tenchi Muyou, Gundam Wing, Slayers, Dragon Ball Z, Golden Boy, original Ghost in the Shell film, Detective Conan, ect). Not to mention those shows laid the foundation for modern anime.

People is forgetting Barakamon this season. I agree that most of the series that aired in 2006 are classics now. We have to wait at least till the next 2 years to see if this year is that good.

Thanks for the info. Since i'm considering the list based on quantity and diversity. I would agree with 2006-2007 but 2014 comes second to me (especially if we start looking at 2013-2014 instead)

I'd say it's still too early to say that but this year has definitely had some awesome anime. This season alone has some top tier contenders such as Monthly Girls: Nozaki-kun, Terror in Resonance, Barakamon, Sabagebu and even SAO II which has so far been far superior to the first season. We've still got a lot more coming as the Fall season is going to be overloaded with great returning anime like Psycho-Pass and Fate/Stay Night. There's also going to be a lot of continuations of great Spring anime like Mushishi Zoku Shou 2, Selector Spread and Chaika , which were all some of my favourite anime this year. So far anyway it's definitely fair to say this year as been incredibly awesome in terms of anime.
