The filler parts of DBZ were the best thing about the show. Goku and Piccolo learn to drive? Amazing. Of course one could also argue that most of the show was filler but screw your logic and reason I loved it.

Just a tip from Ginpachi-sensei:

Gintama is pretty much a filler anime . It fills all your anime needs !

It depends on the definition of 'filler'.

If you're defining it as 'anything I don't like', even subconsciously, then sure, it isn't going to make it better to you.

Truth be told, in non-adaptedl works, filler can have a strong purpose in terms of pacing - giving the audience a breather where nothing exceptionally crazy happens can be important, lest they take a breather themselves and stop watching, which can often result in it not being picked up again, as was my experience with Nagi No Asukara.

Manga/Anime adaption fillers are the most basic form, and while they can be good on their own merits, they have to be placed very carefully in order to not mess up pacing, which is where Naruto, Bleach, etc inevitably fails. A filler at it best should consist of one, maybe two episodes of a side-arc, such as the infamous Dodgeball episode from One Piece. (If anyone knows what the number is, please let me know - it might be 215 but part of me has a feeling Google is confusing it with another dodgeball episode. Haven't seen it myself, sadly...)

Fillers have a place, but using them to only 'fill time' usually results in disaster.

Adding fillers is to balance anime with 1-2 cours.

I'd say the recent Naruto fillers have been fantastic. We learnt about Kakashi's past, and back when the Hidden Leaf was just created. As far as I'm concerned, if it isn't showing the present day and the big situation in the present day (for naruto it's the war), then it's filler. It doesn't mean that it's bad, it's just what I personally define as filler.

Gintama filler (there isn't much though since Gintama prefers to take a break when getting close to the manga then create genuine filler seasons) is best filler. Plenty of horrible executed filler as explained below though.

The sad thing is I could name a bunch of anime where filler screwed up the adaption for each of the mentioned examples above.

It depends. I don't like too much drama on the fillers when the anime characters are in the middle of a fight.

Only if a studio makes them right. People said that one of the set of fillers during Naruto's Great Ninja War arc is worth watching.

Watching the slimmed-down Crystal version of Sailor Moon has helped me realized how much the filler episodes added to the original show. And there are filler arcs of Bleach that I enjoy more than the main plot of the show. So I guess you can put me in the pro-filler camp.

I don't recall much Filler in YuYu Hakusho... If any at all.

Anyway, almost all Filler is just that. Pointless fluff that adds pretty much nothing to the characters, story, plot, or world. It is all just empty of any purpose other than gaining extra time between the anime and the manga. Most of the stories in Filler are pretty bad, too. I am not too sure why they are almost always bad, but... It is what it is... Also, while Naruto has the absolute worst Filler Arcs in the history of ANYTHING, Rurouni Kenshin's Filler Arcs during its third season are a very close second. Not only were they bad enough to get the anime canceled before they ever animated the Jinchuu Arc of the manga (which is a down right crime in and of itself that it wasn't animated...) but they were so bad that it defied all the logic previously made in the series. Also, going from Shishio and the Juppongatana to a series of SCRUBS and trying to make them threatening is a laughable joke, made all the more exasperating that Kenshin had to have some "trouble" dealing with them. The worst offenders being the dumb crap with the Black Knights, and the absolute WORST Filler story in the history of ever, the Feng Shui nonsense that ended up concluding an otherwise wonderful anime before the trash heap of third season. :/

Yeah... I get bitter when it comes to Filler. Cause my experiences are usually this poo when dealing with them.

I'm of the belief that not all filler is bad, and if done right can actually be quite enjoyable.

So how is filler done right? If it fits the following criteria
1. It does not take place in the middle of a current Arc. Interrupting the flow of an arc to show several episodes of completely unrelated material detracts from the show.
2. It does not contradict previously established rules, character development, future or past plot, or characters personalities.

If it does neither of those, and is simply a side story for enjoyment or perhaps to add less relevant (but still informative) information then I'd consider the filler to be decent.

in the last arc the fights were offscreen in the manga, yet the anime animated them and yusuke vs yomi was pretty awesome in the anime, that last speech yusuke said was just beautiful, i remember when yusuke said: you cant end a good party without someone on the floor (dub)

it was just amazing

99% of all anime fillers tend to fuck things up. That 1% may improve the story, but in rare cases
