This is gonna be the goofy mecha show of the season.

There's a goofy mecha anime every season...

But what if it surpasses my expectations and is actually great? That's always my excuse for watching them anyway lol

That's why I always bother to watch at least one episode anyway.

I don't particularly like dragons, or mecha, or magic, or several other things evident from initial description and images--but I watched anyway.

Of this season's shows that I've watched so far, this one has the greatest chance of getting dropped, but I'm almost certain to at least watch episode 2.

I just watched this one. I quite liked it, actually. I have no idea where any of it's going to end up, but I'm pleasantly surprised by it, so far. It has the potential to either go full-Valvrave or to continue developing into a respectable story (or at least a daring one)

Episode 1
This is going to be fun to watch, especially after that ending.

Seems like this is next Valvrave, not solely because of the "rape" part but the designs, characters and everything in this remind me of what made Valvrave very enjoyable trainwreck worth watching.

"We have to rebuild the tainted royal family.Just the two of us..." Sister complex much, lol.

Also guessing Jesus Yamato lookalike is going to be the only male Norma in existent in the series.

Fuck yo mana superiority doctrine and Norma persecution

Did not care at all what happened to Ange. Hopefully that was the point as she can now finally see how much of a terrible person she was being (as well as everyone else in this damn show). If not, I fear for this show.

That's a............frightening way to look at it.

No difference between that view and Princess' towards the Norma.

They've set up a basis for a pretty interesting character arc for Ange; I've been wanting to see a story where the protagonist isn't a blameless, poor little victimized angel for awhile, where they realize they aren't as good a person as they thought they are and they have a chance to take responsibility for their mistakes. The oversaturation of fanservice is unfortunate though, since it could've been a really useful thematic cue in a story dealing with literal dehumanization.

The fanservice by itself is fine if they want to go in that direction, but it could've been used smarter.

Oh well. See where they take it from here.

I think it would be amazeballs if she didn't take responsibility for her mistakes, but merely transfers her superiority towards the literal non-human dragons.

And are you sure they didn't the fanservice a thematic element?

The way the premier was bookended, with the opening fanservice and then how it concluded with

made it seem to me that it was all intentional.

Well it wouldn't be rational to accept a view that rejects the existence of another person now would it. If anything, she needs to be dragged down to the bottom so that she can develop an actual understanding of those who do not fit with their ideals. Maybe then, she can be the one who champions the reform in this system they've established.

hmm, that'd be an interesting take -- I wonder if they'll explore the dragons=norma=monsters angle, or just leave them as random nameless mindless monsters that invade for whatever reason.... It could be a much deeper and more meaningful story imho if they cross the mindsets like that. Guess we'll just have to keep watching to see what they do ^_^

Leave me my dreams.

I've been mulling over our penchant for blameless protagonists since tripping over Propp's Morphology of the Folktale.

The fanservice alone is too pervasive to be any kind of cue by itself, imo.

I mean what does it mean if it's literally inserted everywhere.

The first episode while predictable, has some great potential (heck so did Magical Warfare's first episode so I am cautious) Hopefully we'll see some great character destroying / rebuilding in the process. This is basically, the Dark Knight Rises, the Anime, so we'll see how they handle this. It's a 2 cour so there should be enough episodes to flesh it out. and the bonus that Nana Mizuki plays Ange.will keep me watching from week to week.

@ Bolded

That's what I'm saying.

Otherwise, who says she'll become a champion of justice?

Who says she won't just bring everything crashing down, good and the bad?

If it's the same writers behind Valvrave, wouldn't be surprised if they went that way.

Will need something besides bad fanservice and wonky 3D spaceworms to keep me hooked.

That's why I want her to remain her genocidal-self, but transfer that ideology to be geared towards the dragons. See if the narrative and chars in-universe can justify their ideology, or if we see them in all their awful glory as they merely go from one "enemy" to the next.

I never said I rejected her existence? Where did I say that?

I only said that she deserves her fall from grace.

A lot of people were saying she deserves what she got, but that's almost the same thing that she was saying about the Norma. I don't hate Ange or felt she deserved what happened to her. The society is what is corrupt, it encourages the people to think that way about the people they call Norma. We don't know who started sending Norma away and what the mana is, so it should be an interesting show at least.

Unnecessary rape scene is unnecessary prison rape scene.

The attempt at making Ange seem tragic is ruined by her justified if silly racism against Norma's. The racism is a result of societal rules, not her own beliefs. Ergo, DONT PLAY HER LIKE THE VILLIAN AND HERO AT THE SAME TIME, YOU FAILED TWICE HERE.

Norma's are so blantly named, even Japanese people learning English will understand the word Normal here. Real subtlely is dead.

The Mecha's and Mecha pilots are as cartoony as Doki Doki Precure, only its not s magical girl show... This is not acceptable.

Prince I'm totally a Rapist is obviously a stupid villain. As such, his stupid plot isn't actually evil. The script where the princess didn't realize she can't use magic is the actual villain. What the hell.

Marketing has attempted to make Cross Ange seem like the other Saber. She's badass, has blonde hair, practically a clone of Lightning of Final Fantasy... But she's just s random princess character here. Any changes in future episodes are likely to be more of a fetish tool and less development.

Final verdict - watch Queens blade, a horrible horrible show with the same premise, but less shame.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone speak positively of Lightning from FF before. If that was a positive.

In any case though they're setting Ange up to redeem herself, she's not a hero (or a villain) yet, just a privileged and prejudiced princess protagonist. She'll probably act like a bitch to the other normas for awhile yet; or not, dunno.

It should give me a character arc though, and I usually like those.
